Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)

i thank you, lord, for Electricity

But you can keep your static, buddy. Today the high for the day is -8 degrees Fehrenheit. It was -11 last time i was outside, with windchill estimated at -30. I'm not going outside again today if i can help it.

I am happy you high school people got the day off. Good luck with the car, Bekah. That sucks big time.

I love love love Fridays, as i only have 2 classes and they're in the same building, and they're both lectures which means no homework due or such. I get to sleep in, and i'm done by 1 o'clock. I have no big plans for this weekend, but i think my mom wanted to come visit or something, but she's not now. Rachel? If you read this, tell mom i haven't read my e-mail at wisc, and tell her to call me. I already have plans for next weekend, so the weekend after that would be better for you two to come & visit.

As for the rest of today, i have buckets of reading to catch up on. Perhaps 18 credits is a lot. Hm.

"why won't my lit-tle balloon stay up in a perfectly windy sky?"

A good Tori Amos quote. I could have conversations in nothing but quotes. The conversation does not have to make sense. Here is a good one, by Jean Liedloff, that i found yesterday;

"The more a culture relies upon the intellect, the more restraints on the individual are necessary to maintain it."

and of course, my history prof on Newton's circle of friends:

"it was kind of like the disco scene, but with less dancing and more calculus."

What is it like to sing in English in Italy?

The Ani concert was amazing. Ani is always amazing. Her opener for once was really good too. She (Ani) started with Anticipate, which is one of my very favorite Ani songs, then Your Next Bold Move, which i didn't like so much on the album, but she played it wonderfully. She played two or three new songs, as well as maybe 2 songs from Educated Guess (the album that came out on Tuesday). Her last song before encore was Shy, another of my absolute favorites, and she played it completely different than i've ever heard it before, gorgeous. Encore was Evolve and Gravel, a very abrupt ending to that song; "i heard your wheels hit the gravel, and your engine cutting off--." Powerful.

It was very, very good to see Donna & Mary & Ashley & Elyse. Elyse had never listened to Ani before, and she liked it a lot. It was a weird crowd, older and less hippy-ish than the other Ani crowds i have seen, but then it was a much bigger venue, and more expensive too. Dancin' Nicci was there, right behind us, and i was very happy to see her too. I love seeing my friends at concerts, especially when it's surprise.

"In my garden of simple, you were never anything but beautiful to me."

Ani's foot is better, and she seemed less heartbroken than recent albums would suggest.

  take an educated guess
Ani concert today! I'm very excited.

Mary, Donna, and Ashley (ex-rocky's worker and piercings Ashley) are coming to pick me up! I'm more excited to see them than to see Ani, so it's an all around animated day! Animated as in excited, i just had to continue with the alliteration.

there is nothing i want more
Next time you find some money, buy me this. Seriously, the "and then I found $5 in my pocket!" stories are getting boring. Why not try a "and then I found $250,000 in my pocket, bought Sarah E. a car and we spent a month test driving it to Jamaica!" story?

Anyway: Attention, Rachel G.: I need two things very badly:

a towel (preferably the orange beach one, or the peach one.)
my clear coupon-sorter thingy. It has magazine cutouts in it, and says "Does Sarah Inspire You?" and something about angry hippos on the front. I have looked everywhere for it, and will die if it does not surface soon. You, dear sister, will die if you use any of the clippings in it so do avoid temptation. I think itll be in the family room on that shelf with dad's records & photos & stuff. I hope.

If you could find these things & give them to either Mary or Donna at school this week, I would be eternally grateful.

I will never be a good hitchhiker.

  Happy Half-Birthday, Me.
Day .5 here at Madison is exactly as expected thus far. I should desensitize myself to being unsurprised all the time. That was wordy. What i mean is that i am rarely surprised, and i feel i should be more often, especially since now i'm somewheres wheres i did wants to be, yeah, and my only reaction is, "about time." Rachel R. even pointed it out once, "you're the most unimpressed person ever," or something like that. If it's any consolation, Rachel, your triangle mouth will always impress me, and maybe even surprise me.

I am off to the feminist bookstore to buy a book for a class.

And.

Wait for it.

ANI'S NEW CD, EDUCATED GUESS!!

Also, i'd like to draw your attention to the website of one Cleveland Storrs, a photographer who was on my Bahamas trip as a deckhand. He's a younger, more with-it & new-agey cross between Nate's dad, Dave, & Justin's dad, Leonard. Which is to say, he's awesome, cryptic, and prone to wandering.

i am happy to hear no bop-its. ever.
I am tired, but in Madison, which is where i think i belong. I don't think the school knows i am here, which is vaguely worrying. I don't know my campus ID either, and so on. It's a long boring story, and i have class at 8:30. Many loves, and i shall write more inspiring things soon.

Planes suck. Boats rock.
True.

  The Green Party?
RACHEL!! I love you. But there are two things you must work on:
Spelling
everything else

(sing to the tune of pollution, pollution, smog & sewage & sludge....)

Donna ratted your silliness out. But I did know all along.

I have been subpeoned for introducing foreign splices onboard

But I am innocent. The trial is tonight.

There is a crowd waiting for this super-slow internet connection, so this will be brief. Perhaps. Someone hooked up a TV & we're watching a football game. Boys never change. Boring. I have been called audacious for my dress. What? Bold and daring? I dress bland and boring, especially when forced to find shorts when i own none. Anyway.

I love and miss you all, and thanks for your emails this week. Oddly enough i got several and it is making my day, despite slow internet. The schooner sailing has been a real riot, and i have blisters and broken (bent... er... bleeding, anyway) toes to prove it. And i now understand the Coriolis effect. Ask me about erosian, England, and the Atlantic gyre sometime. Really. It's the bomb diggety when this stuff comes together. Thank you Mary for the word "bomb diggety." I now use it often.

Off i go.

Midget Dolphins & the Water Off the Keys

The trip so far has been a bit much. We have internet access when in cell phone distance of land, and we are south of Plantation Key right now, i do believe. Check our progress on pierwisconsin.org, then click the voyage link. We do water readings every day at noon & midnight.

I should probably go. Curb your subtle enthusiasm.

What Would Juana Do?

Other than carry around a corpse for seven years and then get locked in a glass palace in beautiful downtown Madrid, that is, before it was downtown Madrid. I bet she would be Crazy!

When I die, i don't want to be buried in metal, 4.5 feet down. It's not 6 feet under, as you might suppose due to the popular saying, but in Wisconsin 4.5 feet down. I thank Doug who can regurgitate facts about cemetaries and the Beatles like none other. Yippi for him.

In any case, I'm not sure how to make ink. I would ask the University of Minnesota for you, as they have a minor in Ink Studies, and i must say i'm intrigued, though since i'm not going there it is a moot point. I think maybe I'd like my ashes mixed with things until precipitates form, then someone can exclaim, i have made Sarah Precipitate! And it can be mistaken for primoridial ooze like that time some guy mixed wine with deep-sea water and thought it was primordial ooze, whence all life sprung. Sorry, buddy. However, Juana would know.

  My little boat ride
I'm in Milwaukee, on Elyse's pop-up-plagued computer, made of pure pain.... I have most of the day to myself to do homework, then i'm going to hang out with Elyse and help her write an essay.

I leave for the Bahamas tomorroww, 6 am, for two weeks of sailing and such. There will be many more details on this, donchayall worry. Then I move to Madison. I talked to my roommate on the phone yesterday, her name is Heather and I don't think i have anything to worry about as Bekah says History majors are mostly harmless. Then again, that has been said about Earth, and look what happened there. Wait, that was a bestseller. Hm. Anyway, she's also an Elementary-Ed major, and has student teaching 8 am everyday. I get to be the sleep-in roommate. Exciting! But i will miss Abbey....

cities for sardines

"we evolved to include the synthetic; now we use both to attain perfection." Heya baeby, what's that from? I like it.

There is a fine line between truth and offense. I don't respect people much who go about pushing their opinions on others, but then i find myself doing the same thing. To be fair to myself, i was raised to prostelyze. To be fair to everyone else, i should learn to stop.

Faith is good, as far as it goes. We should realize that our tightly held dogmas are myth, not in the 'false' sense of myth, but in the 'parable' sense of myth. Myths are told to teach us how to live. All cultures have myth, all people can learn from them. I myself am not a big fan of myth, but its value is worth noting. Literal translations do not do myth justice, as the things a 21st century English speaker needs to learn are probably vastly different than what the mythwriters of, say, 4th century B.C. Iran had to teach.

That's my further musings on the subject, and i like the idea of our writing a book. It can be edited works from our collages, blogs, rocky's love letters, taped conversations with a soundtrack by Ani & Tori & you. Wait, let's make a movie. I want to do a limited edition printing with vials of blood attached, because that wouldn't be disgusting at all. Nope. In any case, have an excellent return to school & such, i'll have a smile on tomorrow 'cause i know what Tshirt you'll be wearing.

Rachel Grace, you spell so bad my face hurts. Milwaukee, helmet, and commercial. Just so you know, dad's computer does have Microsoft word which does have an excellent spellchecker. And tetris is the bomb-diggity, better than lame-o Vice City. You have fun avoiding housework this week.

odds: 300 to 1 that we all lose the waiting game.

So begins Year of Our Lord 2004. Perhaps less awful than the last?

My powers of persausian are lacking, but the thing is that when i agree with you i will probably not dissaude you from a course of certain doom. Chances: 3:1, better if you're male. The house is taking bets but the winner is too High up to collect. Like i say, you'd be surprised how normal you are. Now, anyway. To understand normality you must understand time. What is normal for our era is not normal. "The human mind is a product of the Pleisetocene age, of a wilderness that has all but dissappered. If we succeed in our destruction of nature, we will cut ourselves off from the very source of sanity itself." ~David Orr~ It is also not normal for children to live alone. However, trying harder wouldn't hurt.

Collecting lung cancer, collages, and ex-coworkers in cars: baeby, you know all the right questions, trust that that is answer enough.
and enjoy yourself. no one likes a good guilt fest more than you, but you're so good you don't deserve it. You deserve better.

I have never felt i deserve anything good, nor expected it. When (if) things go well i am continually surprised. Flukes, chances, the odds. This is why the human condition is infinently mallable, but we don't really like it. We want our feelings to be valid; they are anything but. Intellectually i know i deserve better also.

If you make the complaints, give the hours. This is the only way things will become less awful.
