Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)
Never plan for a less busy future.
Or rather, don't plan
on a less busy future unless you really
plan it.
Yes, i thought i was caught up; and No, i'm not. At all.
"And I know you won't remember this-tenth grade math, right?"--yet another prof on the work ethic of undergrads--
Today has been one of those wonderful long days of catching up with people here in Madison, all "How was Hawai'i?" "Oh, my science turned out to be RIGHT!" "Yes, but did you go swimming?" "Yeaaaaah...." i like that that's what every last one of them asks.
An acquaintance in history typed up his notes for me, i copied Angie's Structure notes, didn't finish today's assignment, have a lab to do, ran into Dave's friend Andrew, ran into my spectacularly vague friend Daniel for the first time this semestre, and still have a lot to do. La-de-da.
i'm thinking the weirdest thing about this year is that i finally know people who know each other in Madison. It's not all disconnected; i went to Tess' (second 21st!) B-day last week &
knew a few of her other friends [followed by a wonderful roomie karoke rendition of 'Ï think i'm a clone now'... Dave is
so done for]; my neighbor Jason had lunch Sunday with this girl Hannah i know through Erin L.; Daniel (aforementioned) knows M, L & other M so we're all a-gonna have super at my house soon--and so on. It's wild and almost too exciting.
green coat across the mall, not-flat billiard tables, and the history of electromagnetism
yes, yet more news on sunburns and academiaWe all have themes & patterns, you know.
Soooooooo----back in Madison, caught up with roommates, Angie, some other Geol people, co-workers, and the random older gay guy who hangs out upstairs, but haven't started essay that's due this week, or studied for two tests that are this week. Copied Structure notes; but have two concept maps, one lab & two page paper due for that class this week [
nts: structure stuff here]. And Jon'll be back in town any minute now, so it's not like i'm going to do homework tonight....
i thought i told all of my profs/TAs that i'd be gone last week, apparently i didn't and this slip on my part made the decision for me to drop 875--Geomicrobiology [as the mega homework that's due Tuesday i'm not very far on]. i think i'm okay with this, as i'll be in Madison anyway this summer & can take a bio class then... yup.
And i'm way behind on calls/stuff--so email me if anything crazy happens that i should know about, and i'll get around to calling all you wonderful people soon-ish.
Oye, back at it sarah eddy!
"Austria: paradise of vague science, public transportation, and smoking in the lab."
flying into snowstorms with a sunburnSince i last posted, i went to less & less actual conference and more & more... you know, laziness time. Hiked, swam, shopped. {Shit, sarah==bad scientist!} But this, my friends, is what they ALL do. i ran into many others hiking, swimming, shopping.
One of the other interns even ran into his scientist at 1:00 a.m.--both, "Where you going? Hotel? Oh! Well, then, good night!"
So in REAL EXCITINGNESS! i did go to (but one) session Friday, on the Southern Ocean and its margins ("
Sediment Archives and Dynamics of Environmental Change and Varibility") in which some very similar work to my boss' was talked about--AND--and the Princeton guys had very old dates from southern ocean forams ~23,000 bp too. i got real excited about this, Liz got real excited about this, they're going to write a paper together (using my data, not that i'll be a coauthor or anything) and so on. Then my scientist took me tshirt shopping. Have i mentioned the world of bizarreness i live in??
"Sarah, you can't go to Hawai'i without buying an obnoxious tshirt. Since you're a broke undergrad, I'll get one for you."
i love my boss!
The conference overall was overwhelming--i can now understand why people specialize so early in their careers. The eighteen [funded together] undergraduates were bizarrely cliquey--gossipy even--to which i said, look, half of these people we'll never see again & the other half we have to work with the rest of our lives-so
calm it down, troops. They went drinking again instead [Christi to Greg; "You people!"].
My roommate for the week was awesome, we spent all night Thursday talking on the beach and on our 31st floor balconey overlooking Honolulu--she's crazy microbes & health stuff, currently studying abroad in Vienna, generally fine character kind of girl--about every subject imaginable
except gaming; and then i realized i hadn't talked about WoW all week, or normal boy stuff for that matter either [except for the fratty boys, but they were all around entertainment not to be taken seriously anyway] and you know i love my Madison things, but it is boy land for the most part. So that was good.
i schmoozed with just about every big-wig-mucky-muck from Lamont-Doherty, Scripps, Washington, Texas A&M, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Caltech, Alaska, etc. that was there, and do not remember a single name. Go me! But that's okay. The best was Thursday, trying to find the guy from Washington (me with my sunburn, him with the red-on-pineapples shirt) in the dark [so friday, "Don't change! Don't ever change! No... literally."].

and now i'm back in Madison, homework homework homework.
so much more happened, but i am tired of typing.
"I would give up my tyrannical reign if anyone else knew where we were going."--Phil on finding Diamond Head--
"Island bears only eat the beautiful--Phil, you will be sacrificed to us."--Rachel on... stuff--
"That is too much dance for one room!"--me on the Japanese dance squad outside of the bar 'Rumors'--
"Yes, 'Scuba Team Dies in Forest Fire.' And I'm first-aid trained too!"--(roomie) Liz on former part time jobs & newspaper headlines--
Poster; done with. Went well. Somebody who basically does the same thing i do except with computres stopped by, other than that it was mostly disinterested people or people i already knew [as the Rutgers rep, they all had to say hi... and take pictures. Lookit this picture! you can tell i'm in Hawai'i by the lei.].
Still haven't left this area except for brief visit to Waikiki for drinks.
Drinking with strangers==bad idea; didn't stay long.
Very many interesting talks today... um and stuff.
Doing Science & other Quality book titles
not swimming or surfing or drinking mai taisSo, everyone in Wisconsin: i am in Hawai'i for SCIENCE. Let me reiterate that all i've done is walk within a two block radius from the hotel to conference center & back again, and worry lots and lots about my poster.
Now, my poster is great--so why should i be worried about it? Well, because my copy of it is still in San Francisco. Yes, because United decided i needed to spend an extra 12 hours in the San Fran airport hangin' with Japanese basketball teams & wall displays on the utility of the footstool, they decided my bag & poster would LOVE even MORE time there... and so on. This is stress, sarah eddy--when your friends think you're taking a week off from the college life and what do you get? The same [not fancy enough] outfit for 3 days & a lot of weird questions on carbon cycling.
But really, the conference itself is very interesting. Lots of good posters, lots of good talks, people from everywhere, i could go on.
But i gotta get back, you know.
"Not to be the stereotypical person from Wisconsin or anything, but i really hope they have cheese at this buffet."
really, TELL ME ABOUT THE WEATHER SOME MOREsooooooooo kidding.
However, the weather today is
actually notable in that [for those of you Not in Wisconsin] there is more snow falling today than fell cumultively the rest of winter.
Walking home yesterday was a feat of tundra life; walking home today...? And my boss couldn't come in, so i'm at work all night; but that's okay because Muuyacm got cancelled (because of the snoooooooooooooooow!).
i feel my whole life is an "Elephant Joke Book" sketch that never quite made sense.
Not even to fourth graders.
And, in midst of last-minute planning for trip, i have:
1. not done all my homework that is due tommorrow
2. not done all my homework that is due next week while i'll be gone
3. not enough money to do laundry
4. no clean clothes
5. a snowstorm between me & the laundrymat anyway
6. no nice "professional" clothes either
7. no access to cash in Madison [i am SO taking out RCU's "customer help department," bitches]
8. very greasy hair
9. a broken shower
10. a sandwich! that is getting cold! yuuuuuuuuum!
11. discovered that wiscmail takes updates from two computres at once while blogger does not
12. fuck, i could go on but i better get back to work
"You had me till the "fairy dust helps miniaturize tattoos" bit, now... I think you're prone to exaggeration dear one."
conversations on racism & a Blondie song in my headSmoking stole something from me; i had begun to think. i feel like crap and exclude myself from smoke-free social situations. The successful never smoke--social taboo.
But let me tell you about something fun that i do.
M/W/F after history class, i walk across the street to the language department, where there is this fabulously windy balconey, overlooking the medical centers and the physics department, full of a fabulous eclectic mix of the language department regulars. There's a TA or three, a transvestite from the deep south, a teacher with credentials doing all the Van Hise paperwork, my wonderful vague friend with curly grey hair and several emo undergrads asking for lighters. They talk about everything from grammar to race politics, and i am the resident scientist to fact check speculations on the weather.
And they don't expect anything from me, except maybe gum. They tell me about the places they've lived (which in sum total is almost everywhere) and compare places to eat within walking distance from the capitol.
note: Swaraj Jingle, Arkansas has one of these acquaintances stamp of approval.

Very, very simple patterns.

Angie & Ans can do it... but what about Sarah G.? Ohhhhhhhh....
"And so we followed the blood trail back to its source."--a few of the boys, Saturday afternoon--
You know it's a good party when one host is passed out in the neighbor's bathroom & the other one (me) just leaves. Because there was no where left to sleep.
Both nights had crazy-large turnouts, with my 7 EC people both nights & 4 of Dave's each night. One of them (Leaf, wearing green--no really!) wandered drunkenly into a fight and Nik cleaned his blood up, hence the above quote. We danced with the neighbors and the neighbor's ex-loves, and few of the geology people or the girls (that i really do know a few of) ever showed up, but all of the muuyacm kids and Jon's brother & Jon's brother's roommate & half of Dave's dorm friends & several random acquaintences did & we watched clone high & Ian told stories & we smoked on the back porch waaaaaaaaaay tooooooooo much & i don't know why but i cleared out the vodka single-handedly (probably to give me a new reason to hate myself) & we had breakfast at a real diner in Madison (i swear they exist!) & Jason & his friend stole the only alcohol we'd possibly notice was missing (Ian's Sailor Jerry) & Nik blamed the Illinois people, but i finally found it on the porch & Maddie & Bekah didn't make out, but we thought they would i suppose, & Dave was happy because i gave him all the photos of such things from the last party & and we lost Kirk's car (
TWICE!) & i felt so bad because i don't have certain telephone numbers memorized & it was so good to see everyone from home & that so many of my friends-in-law like me & these two girls with really pretty hair said so many nice things &
Blake lost his shoe! and made bag shoes instead! & i finally found out why Kirk didn't know his sister's last name two years ago & we rearranged my furniture so very many times & Ian laughed-laughed-laughed at this & i told everyone about my new collage & Jon had a headache so his mom talked about reality television to us on speaker-phone & even Damian talked to not-EC people & i can't believe i saw him in the daylight & i pronouced "facade" wrong & spent $50 on pizzas but Blake bought my other-food & Nik & Ian told me many weird things but i believed them because i trust them furthur than Ian could throw Nik & we played glasses roulette in the morning & so many more things happened but now i am tired of trying to remember what's worth typing.
That was quite the paragraph, even for me.
Now the house is clean again, and i am behind in school-stuff.
"The real question is; what IS the New York City Police Department doing fighting bears??"--Ian on bear-suit man--
dear Querida sarah,
play
with this more when you're not at work running on three hours of sleep with fourty-five hours of work to do in the next twenty, have seven of your bestest friends, along with at least four of your roommates' and possibly a stray dog at your totally trashed house & a plane flight to check on for next saturday.
love, sarah
p.s. yo' family is cra-zy!
"Thirty? No way!"Time for the massive friends & strangers party, and i am already a bit tired. Hm (last night already being intense drinking...).
i got Kirk, Adam, Damian, Blake, Bekah, Nik, Ian & a dog on the check list, and we're keeping the "West Doty: No Homicides Here" theme* (so bring nice-ish clothes for Saturday).
After some homework is done i'm sure the excitement will rise.
*given that we've had bomb threats and fires on the block already this semestre, it's not all that ludicrous to ask for this
"Chicken: nature's meat fanny-pack."
if i took Bryan's advice & wrote a book:Title:
"From Sears-Catalogue Cult Member to Scientist in Five Terribly Coordinated Steps: An Autobiography of Hope"
with the following awesomest blurbs:
"I'm glad she took my advice and wrote down the story of her life--but she should have mentioned me more! Actually, she should have just written a(nother) book of poetry about me!" -Bryan "The Muse" N.--
"Sarah is a bad story-teller, but I edited out all the lies she stated as fact, proclaimed across the nations, tattoed into the eyes of the Young Lambs of the Holy Land, called the Word of God and attached these inventions of shoelaces to its Glory. Anyway, I fixed those lies and she corrected the grammar." -Swaraj "Not A Lier Like Sarah!" E.--
"Awesome super-genius science girl fighting champion! The sentence structure, however, has only improved marginally since 1999." --Tony "Fuck Ya'll" E.--
and so on.
have i got that right?
"Wait, which one of them is gay?"--Jon on Tony & Jason running--
Friday: drive to EC with Elyse, Caitlyn & Ben, eat with Mom & Swaraj Jingle*, hang out with Swaraj Jingle, Bryan, Donna, etc... stuff!
Saturday: drive to cities with Jason & Rachel, pick up Tony, meet other car group at Walker, be confused for awhile, eat with Bekah, Elyse's family, and aforementioned people, nap at Tony's, nap while seeing Evan (opps), nap some more, Mac Dance, drive back to EC & Bryan's house with Tim & Hoopela. Or however one spells that kid's name.
The Walker was okay, i liked the architechture exhibit, especially
Turbulence house &
WeeHouse. Food not that great, and why we drove to Bloomington for it i'll never understand. Also, Tony has a top-drawer neighbor. Top-drawer.
In sum, i was tired by the time i got home.
Right now i am overwhelmed with the amount of work i should do, the fact i'm leaving for a week during the busiest bit of the semestre, and many other things that i couldn't go into detail on without getting flustered. Sorry about my laconic-ness hereabouts lately, but i'm sure we all can deal.
O
Stereonets & my
library-job....
*Swaraj Jingle being the sister formerly known as RGE (she
just realized on Friday that my name can be written in a circle while hers cannot, and was mortally offended by our mother's oversight in her nomenclatural care, and immediately changed her name. Jingle was the first word ending with an E she could think of, and Swaraj the first word starting with an S & ending with a J that i could think of... in sum, harmony and rings from the sky).
"I will not apologize for the fact that it took me a full fifteen minutes to explain the pain I would cause you--just be warned that I am more than willing to actually do it too."--Bryan... long story, but this quote is funny too--
guess what?!
1.
RGE has a lisp! Now she's a telemarketer!
2.
Jellyfish Invade Japan!3. unusual cathexes for esoteric things==fun! (the singular of "cathexes" is cathexis...and now you know.)
4. i'm going home tommorroww! [plans: Friday: craziness! Saturday: Walker, food, Mac Dance]
5. who (that doesn't) wants to live in Madison this summer? i have ample room for you.
6. [but most notably!]
