"I have insurance!"--Dad--

Scene: elbow-face-mass of MM fans, the Rave, Milwaukee:
some guy [sarcastically]: "I TOTALLY WANNA HEAR FLOAT ON!"
some girl: *punches him*

Ouuuh, that was all just too much fun for me!
[today i drove from Madison to EC & back.]

Sindy really let us down yesterday at 4:00 by dropping the transmission mere blocks from my daddy's hotel, and after i called everyone i knew in Madison asking to borrow their car, we resorted to renting one from the airport. (Daddy rented an Armada, aptly named for size and structure, ie, it wouldn't float well against the English but held the Army of Love that was all of us for the miles required.)

So we got to the MM concert!

Which was awesome. RR & i got pushed right up front, RGE got pushed around, and MaRy & Donna excused themselves from the stuffy chaos and probably breathed the best all along. I was mere feet away from the stage, close enough to see tattoos. Oh yesh.

Seeing Modest Mouse after all these years was weird. I know their songs/albums so well but never had a mental picture of what they might look like, and i think they all look like nice guys. They look like the type of guys who would hang out at Racy's [... before Racy's imploded and left us all for DEAD, that is]. They had two drummers, and just about everybody in the band played several instruments. Dad said he didn't even realize they had a banjo until he saw it, to which i said dad, stop being deaf a la Hellen Keller, but i suppose... anyway. Talent.

I really liked the live version of 'cities made of ashes.'

Mason Jennings was pretty good too.

Though some girl next to RR & i fainted right before that.

i was just too happy to see my girls, i was. And now, partly because of the Giant Sindy's Transmission Sucks Fiasco, i'll be in EC next weekend. Bomb!

i should write out my homework, but i'm unispired. i saw my kitty today, he's just too cute. Someday, when i have a place that allows cats, all of my posts will again deal with just how adorable Thomas is, but for now you'll just have to deal with the sporadic-ness of the times i randomly visit northern wisconsin and have him spill my milk. Speaking of milk, RGE discovered the source of my snottiness: "you drink too much milk."

Spanish sonnets suck. German suicide notes don't.

i miss the sound effects already... MaRy, Donna, R-s... GO IN THE KITCHEN AND MAKE ME A TAPE!

"We could knit the world a smile!"--MaRy--

RR: *gets really excited about MM concert*
Me: *gets really excited about MM concert, seeing my girls, and hydrothermal vents, or more specifically the guy from Washington who's coming here to talk about them*
RR: "Stop being a geek!"
Me: "Boot Rachel, that's where they think LIFE originally EVOLVED!"
RR: "In Seattle?"

We are just too funny.

In other news, i totally shot my future in the foot again!

But... it might be okay?

Conflict resolution 101: "I am Kelly."

(the Rocky's story that i still find hilarious... i was reminded of it by my friend JoAnne, who was doing research on Geological Engineering in Ohio, who had a guide who said, "I am "Joe."" She found that funny... anyway.)

The other funniest thing ever: i am now a published poet.

"No, not that sort of simple!"

I am so excited for this weekend. Saturday we're going to Milwaukee in the early afternoon, to see Elyse, discuss copper sulfate poisoning, and play mad libs. These will be the coolest mad libs ever.

Oh yeah, and Modest Mouse....

The Story of My Life:

Really Old Photos, Round Four!

i got a package in the mail! (thank you RGE!) Besides about 3 million wonderful cds, i got some old photos back that my mom apparently developed recently. These are from my "work" this summer, as well as our trip to the Medieval Faire.

Disclaimer: i don't claim to be a great photographer. i just have access to a magical scanner. Also, there are some other even more incriminating photos that certain people should give me money not to post. (i'm broke, waaaaaah.)

Minnesota Road Trip:

The elephant.

The elephant makes a few friends: Rachel, Rachel, me, Donna, Bryan. I especially like our range of costume.

An alligator and a knitter... (not a shark).

Begging tortoise. (who was infatuated with this? because i remember the excitement and not the source, that's WEIRD.)

Bryan & i practise several methods of looking retarded, Tony looks happy.

Geminizzle-drizzle:

Bekah & Glynis.

Well, okay. We all look funny. i think there should be a vote over who looks the goofiest here.

Glynis wins!

Bekah & Bryan.

Bryan, pre-photoshopping fun.

"Are you taking structure?"
*sirens*
"No, maybe next year."

So yesterday whilst i was walking home from my stupid, stupid bank all the electricity went out on State Street. Even Memorial Library was out for the count, and i regretfully didn't steal any books.

Then, after class last night, we went to the study pub which is on the 8th floor of the Fluno Centre, a business school building. Rather hoity-toity for Madison, if you ask me. The electricity had come back on at some point, but while i was talking (with my back to the window) it suddenly got very dark. All the electricity from the capital to the lake and about 4 blocks inland went out, including traffic lights. Our block was still electrified, and we had the best view in town of catastrophe. It looked eeire, and the capital must have its own power supply, because it was the only thing lit up for blocks around.

Get it? Capital+Power? i am just too funny.

Really Old Pictures, Round 3
Somewhat old pictures
These are from a GeoClub party last semestre.

Indiana Jones rules over Weeks Hall.

The dots in the front are us.

This one is supposed to be the same prof that was holding up the rock in the last set o' pictures. (He's tall, everyone else is short....)

The stained glass wall, done by Shannon. It's very accurate.

For comparison, an actual photo of Weeks Hall. Apparently it hasn't been photographed since 1976, but you get the idea.

'readatize' this!

RGE, your grammar is the funniest thing in the world! I am so glad i have one of you for my very own! You should try spelling 'fooly cooly' more correct-ly. Also, you don't have to feel like a bad person for buying manga, posters and the like, you should feel like a bad person for not buying me stuff.

Just kidding, i own way too much crap.

Speaking of crap, i have/had been feeling pretty crappy lately. I have in fact been feeling like a really bad person, for more reasons than buying things frivolously (since i have no spending money, that would be impossible anyway). There was a catalyst this time, and i have figured out the reason, and why the reason made me feel so awful. So. I am now attempting to regulate the negative feedback loop the whole situation is creating, namely by actively being a good person. This is really hard, but since Bryan & i created our checklists a few weeks ago, i have thought about the flip-side of what those checklists entail, and i think i'll be okay.

Plus, it's nice out today, and i had coffee with a good friend/fellow UU, and i'm sure the rest of my Spanish & Physics homework won't kill me.

I am so exicted about the concert next weekend, i couldn't even tell you. Besides the obvious excitement of seeing Modest Mouse, i can't wait to see 5 of the absolute lovliest people in the world. I miss you alllllllll... but what-EV! It's mere days away, yo. (wait, how many of us are going again? i'm a fritz today... MaRy, Donna, RGE, RER, Dad. yes, 5. plus me... okay, am i forgetting something, RGE, or do we have another ticket? and how are we all going to fit in one car?)

Really Old Pictures, Round Two

These are from a field trip i took with my economic geology class last semester.

The entrance area of Casteel mine.

This is inside the mine, it's crazy and not well understood. Especially by me, 'cause i haven't learned to keep good field notes yet.

The hats did something special for our collective geek-factor.

Drills....

Bubbles of lead (+ some other chemical that i forgot)

Our campsite, at the highest point in the Ozarks. There was a sound theory for staying there. That's Sarah H. & i setting up her sleeps-an-army tent.

Replacement. And a swiss army knife, standard issue.

Missouri Ski Jumps (ash flows visible in facing cliff).

um... this was way cool, but i have forgotten its significance. From looking at it, i'd guess xenoliths or inclusions... i vaguely remember something about being able to see several phases of volcanism here, but i'm not sure. In any case, there were volcanology classes from everywhere that day, so it must be more amazing than i can recall right now. Also, swiss army knife, non-standard issue.

Sarah, Brett, and Jackie. (same area as one above.)

My professor is SO STRONG!

You might say this is a pretty cool tree. But you could never say it as enthusiastically as my classmates did, or as often.

"You do what you have to do, Sarah Eddy. The only standards you need to meet are your own."--Arian--

As i had been thinking a lot about what Arian said about allies, and was a bit upset about some things the other day, i called him and we had a nice chat [as Megan is in Ireland, he has her cell now]. Even though our lives are completely different, i think of Arian as my 'philosophy ally' or something like that... in any case, he has a way of mixing my thought messes into delectable dishes, and perhaps more importantly simplifies the screwy language i like to use. And after listening to me bitch for awhile he gave me some good news. So all is well.

My freshman year back at UWEC i don't really consider to be a school year at all, considering the amount of time spent on school stuff vs. amount of time spent at either Rocky's or OV vs. amount of time spent at Racy's vs. amount of time spent watching movies and playing with the cat. I've been trying really hard to become an academic, in a way, (i.e., by taking a million 3+ geology classes last semester) and had begun to imagine that that year or so was a black-box of experience that would have little effect upon my later school stuff. But tis not so, the only zero is the moment of introduction. So though i was frusterated at the time that i was 'not getting anything important done,' i'm really happy i got to spend that time there.

Right now i'm still not sure if i'm studying abroad next year or whether i'll be in EC or Madison or some more funky place this summer, but i've turned in some apps and Jim from Pier Wisconsin wrote me a really, really good recommendation. I was seriously impressed and... honoured, even, that he has such a high opinion of me. So even though the essay i used for the Rios app was silly, as i stated frankly that i still don't know what sort of research i'd like to do with them, i might have a chance. If they can't deal with my undecided yet honest self, that's their problem, and i do have other options. And now, since i have all the stupid resume/essay crap put together, applying for other stuff will take minutes rather than all day.

Okay, enough reflection time for me... back to the Physics grinding mill.

It's no fun....

Really Old Pictures, Round One

These are from my trip to the Bahamas a year ago. I have about a million more, but then i began to wonder just how many 'pretty sunset from the bow!' pictures one really needs. i especially like the last one, because i have no recollection of it being taken, but i'm making the 'i'm glad no one saw that' face... in my defense, furling sails is way harder than you might expect.

(i am amused that because i'm always on a computer it appears that i am always working.)

Again! i only slept ~4 hours, but i feel really good. This is really, really weird. Now the question is how will i feel tonight... lots o' meetings today, yo.

I got your card MaRy, and i happened to see your brother yesterday, and he was nice. i'm thinking of having a party when youse guys come. RGE: ask dad if he'll drive ya'll down for Friday night.

then the journalist said:
"is barbarian spelled with two 'b's or not two 'b's?"

That is the question.

(that's from Bryan's friend's modern-day Hamlet interpretation.)

i just listened to a guy with a heavy British accent and a speech impediment talk for an hour and a half, and the odd thing is that i understood more of what he said than i do with most people. Including such statements as, "Grasshopper poop is JET FUEL to low gain ants!" and "For the Sumerians, rape-loot-pillage-how-do-we-get-this-home?? was an easier problem than agriculture!"

yes, all statements were exclamatory as such and RLPHDWGTH was usually one word.

This is the guy i'm talking about. (if you read the article, you'll see this post does actually contain some bit o' continuity.)

okay, the continuity ends there, 'cause i also wanted to mention just how clever i am:

Me: "My education is so spotty i should name it dog."

That's funny, no?

"it's better to burn out than to fade away
my my hey hey"
--Neil Young, the best man ever according to my dad

My CD player is having an identity crisis. It thinks it's a can opener. It ate two of my CDs, a MaRy mix and my Blur album. This made me very sad.

(RGE/Kirby: this means you should burn me a new copy of my blur album. that would make me happy.)

Hmmmmm... i slept for maybe 3 hours, but i feel really, really good. This is odd.

And guess what! It's snowing in Madison! Like it SHOULD be!

gunpowder circles

It should not be raining here. It should be SNOWING. Blah!

It occured to me that my life could be considered very, very exciting. The problem, as i see it, is that most of the excitement is not fun-excitement, but rather annoying-excitement. I will now construct an 'annoying filter' and apply it to conversations, events, and random passerby.

Yeah, right after i do my homework which is decidedly non-exciting.

"It wasn't the sort of hobby you tell Robert McNamara about."

"Any government that commits, condones, promotes or fosters torture is a malignant force in the world. And those who refuse to raise their voices against something as clearly evil as torture are enablers, if not collaborators."

New York Times Article.

Okay, yes, i realize you have to register for NYT articles, but it's free and such, and the NYT is good enough that a few really annoying pages are worth the time.

zorastrians and other GREAT prequels

i had a good night, full of many desultory conversations and such. i now have a great many things to do.

my favorite one-liner that came up was "The Bible is a good book, but it doesn't leave much for a sequel." To which i said, 'unless you're Muslim or a Latter-Day Saint,' 'spose.

i have also named that phenomenon that often happens zese days (with so many people moving around all the time) when a new person comes into a long-standing social situation at a very decisive point and either changes the whole balance of what might have happened and/or gets really, really confused by everyone's backround dramas. It's the "Glen Syndrome" in honour of A Midsummer Night's Dream and all the funky group dynamics in the months that followed. i have, indeed, succumbed to the Glen Syndrome here in Madison, but now i've been here long enough to fling it upon others. Life is GREAT!

on second thought, the Glen Syndrome is itself a reference to a very specific setting, so if anyone has ideas for a more general term i'd like that. Perhaps in reference to a movie or book? Hm.

i'm glad you too had a nap, MaRy!

Scene: this summer, pulling into my driveway which was already full of ~7 beatup cars:

"Ya'll are white trash, Sarah."
to which i said nothing because all evidence pointed that way.

Last weekend while i was in EC i saw Akira parked on the frontage road off of Clairemont, very near to the Keith street area. So Akira is still in range, but don't get too excited if you see her, as she's not myne anymore. Also my dad sold his tracker, our house isn't a first class trailer lot anymore.

Some important things are coming together. I'm applying for summer internships, which is very hard in that i hate hate hate asking for people to write reccommendations, and very easy in that i can bs well about how great i am/will be even if i don't think it's true. But i have 2 good professors writing them, one from here and one from Milwaukee, who are both fairly enthusiastic about the things i'm applying for. So it's a real long shot, but it's better than i thought it would be.

"So, okay. The plan to get the website back up will involve us dressing as goth as possible and going to the Inferno this Friday... and that's not an allegory or exaggeration."

'algo de color vivo'

Spanish short stories are so violent! Nothing but death and destruction and misery! And blindness! I should really start writing that paper i've been fretting about all day. About blindness! And misery!

But in good news, i did my Physics for once. There's a very interesting speaker coming here today, one John Perkins/author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. It's like Leon the Professional mixed with Wall Street, but the serious part is that it's true and not much fun.

Like Spanish short stories.

*even though i did solve my philosophical dilemma with math the other day while b.s.ing with Bryan... it doesn't quite give me the motive i need. It just proves to me that out-il-logic-ing my most illogical friends can bring us all back to perfect logic. CHAOS!

and who likes logic anyway?

Me: "Well, if you're going to gamble it might as well be with your life."
Bryan: "Right! [...]"

and other wonderful things said at 3 a.m.

Whew! i'm back in Madison, after a whirlwind of a weekend involving several parties and such, and most importantly i got to see my lovely Rachels and ate supper with Donna today. Megan left for Ireland today, so twas wonderful to see them-all Friday, and both the costume-swap party and the '90s party were interesting in their own special way.

and now i have way too much to do. Ay.

"illuminati schluminati"

i'm going north this weekend. The plan thus far is hang out with Bryan & RR Friday night, Abbey's party Saturday night, and stop by Wausau to visit Donna & (uncle) Dale Sunday. Yes. Abbey's party is 90s-themed, RR wants to go as Daria & Jane.

To Do List:
-learn Spanish
-Physics homework
-stop fussing about my problems (they're "fun problems," as my mother likes to say)
-two-thirds of RR's 'special homework for SE'
-fill out many forms

"We were professional! Weren't we? We must be professional!"
"We were very professional. Power-points, agendas, checklists..."
"I think the hemp comment gave us away."

"Don't eat it if it don't rot."

And other health advice from my mother.

A public service announcement is in order to clear RR's name from any derogatory statement(s) i may or may not have insinuated that she made. She never said Geologists were boring, she said "there's a reason they don't make movies about Geologists."

Good movies, anyway.

That is probably true, and has in fact been the subject of much angst among us undergrads.

Funeral Story Time!
Scene: circa 1960, a southwestern Wisconsin funeral home.

Some old lady: "Aren't you sad your aunt died?"
My [then 5-year-old] mom: "No, she smelled."

This was, of course, followed by an extra special time-out.

Jon: "Yes, the girl had lawnmower wheels."
Dave: "I decided to go on the Wisconsin diet. [to Angie] I think working for Basil has affected your hearing."
Angie: "What?"

See, it's funny 'cause the whole thing was repeated ad absurdum until everyone knew where everyone else had gotten confused. And RR thought Geologists were boring! Who else comes up with words like archaeopteryx & accretionary wedge while playing hangman?

To Do List:

-laundry to dry cleaners
-save the world
-physics homework
-
-oops! i missed one!
-fix broken foot, future, couch & TV
-give ten points to whoever points out the OM reference in this post.
