Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)

EC? ay. Good times, too long o'drive. The moons of Jupiter? Entertaining... gwad.

in a "i'm colourblind and i'm an artist, i'm dyslexic and i'm a writer" sort of way.

whoever names the source of the above quote is awesome. Forcefield, give someone else a chance first, though. I know you got it.

And i still have the "Ansel Adams" song in my head.

Gracias. Pronounce it right, yo.

OH, Donna, yes i am comin' to town. Want to find some lung cancer tommorroww? Or late tonight?

Novelty quickly becomes rountine. I have now lived in Madison for just over a month. I have only missed one youth group meeting, and in the week following saw three people who inquired as to whether or not i would be there yesterday (i was). This afternoon i go home, to see Rachel, and it feels like i'm leaving behind important stuff here. Well, okay, technically i am because i have homework that i can really only do here, and there's a movie i really want to see that i could only see here, but mostly i'm surprised at myself for how fast i got used to Madison. Whatever "antifriends" bug i had last year in EC is totally cleared up--i've already met more people here than i ever did at u-wec.

Brian: I don't know what I should give up for Lent....
Me: How about Catholicism?

It's official, i'm coming to EC this weekend. Erin & i are leaving around 2 tommorroww afternoon, so i'll be in town around 5 or so. Rachel, do your Spanish so i can help you with pronounciation, and i think we should go to Denise's shower on Saturday. Greek food is always good, no? Wait, you hate it. Nevermind.

Evan, anytime during the 6th-14th would be great, but of course during the week i have school and therefore would not be providing entertainment or such.

God, i love my acting class. Just so you all know.

25 feb 2004

Oh, i will miss Frankie too.

There is nothing better than a squirmy tube rat with no sense of balance, one tooth, and not quite enough hair.

Rachel, don't you have any good news?
too sad....

do you want me to come home this weekend? because i could. i have a ride up, but i have lots i need to do here. but if you want to have a sistersister day, i'm up for it.

also, what are ferrets supposed to eat normally?

24 feb 2004

Next Wednesday, Erin L. and i are going to go see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I am very excited.

Tomorroww i have a journal due in my acting class, and thursday i have another journal due in my other acting class. that means i will spend all of my foreseeable waking hours 'reflecting' on my acting abilities and progress thus far. Summary: i suck.

Back-to-back tests for me. I am told this often happens when taking 203 and 204 concurrently, but it hardly seems nice. How else am i supposed to get all my credits done? Ay, and all of my weekends in April are sold to field trips.

I have a Fiona Apple song in my head, and if it's symbolic of anything i swear i will stab the god of symbolism... or the muse of song... what-EV. This is the last time you get in the way of my knife.

This weekend has been all my own, and it has been wonderful. I still have a lot to do... i should really get on that. I'm listening to Harvest over and over, because my dad gave me a copy. I think he just gave it to me because he had two copies, but i'd like to think there's some greater symbolism. (My dad's incapable of symbolism, so i search around sometimes for it)

In other news, I finally talked to Charlie last night. He called at midnight. That kid is great! My very favorite new game is to see people i know from EC or elsewhere who don't know i'm here and watch their expression. I ran into Mei-Ling Friday, and she was the most astounded-looking girl i've seen yet. Also, Sam J. (Danielle's sister) was here this weekend for a diving meet, and we played this game on each other. High schoolers at the UW? Even i get confused.

Well, i'm a big liar, or at least stupid with calenders. Spring break is in three weeks, not two, so youse ec folks will be a'missin me for another week. I know ya'll care deeply. My cousin Denise is getting married on the 20th of March, and i'm an usher or something for her wedding, so apparently much of my time is called for. Denise is awesome; in the last year she has started college, built a house, gotten engaged, and fallen off a horse and had emergency surgery. Okay, the falling off her Clydesdale isn't cool, but what's cool is that she keeps on going right through it. I wonder what she'll do next year.

"It is dangerous to be sincere unless you are also stupid."

I mean this quote in the most ironical, self-depreciating sense-- it's not that i'm not sincere, or that i really think i'm stupid. i am intelligent and i am sincere; danger. If you ask an unfair question you will get an unfair answer. (but i really have been not so nice in my questioning lately... apologies)

I have no agenda. no plans. nothing. I'm not kidding, and i don't quite get why the point must be pressed. Do most people have plans? Honestly? of course i've been through all those leader seminars and such--"People Who Write Down Their Goals Achieve Them!" BS, and i can never bring myself to do it. Sure, i'm in college and am marginally successful in my academic pursuits, but that's just the shit i do to pass the time. I expect nothing and will probably get nothing, but i'm okay with that.

Since you asked, i think i can tell you why i so completely lack ambition: i was never told the reality of death. That may sound like pointless shit/rhetoric (i.e, who really believes they're gonna die when they're 20?) but it is how i grew up. Very few people literally reject the possibility of death in their lives; however, the religious community of my parents/youth did. Sincere Jehovah's Witnesses expect to live forever. That's why people become Jehovah's Witnesses, because they're so damn afraid of death.

So, if a little girl honestly believes she will live forever, what is the use of setting goals for tommorroww? I'll have forever to do anything i want. Now, little girl grows up and and *suddenly* realizes that "god is just another story that we tell" and hey-lo, therefore everything the JWs believe is shit. Since she has no none-JW friends, boo-hoo, life sucks, et cetera. Ta-ta, it happens to them all. That's why JWs are technically defined as a cult.

Now, time for another fun lesson in shit JWs teach themselves: if you're not a JW, you are a bad, bad person. This is the truth, this is how it is, end of story. You cannot fight the words in the Holy Book, no matter how poorly translated (and/or inappropriate for our era).

So most ex-JWs are, in fact, *bad* people. They do drugs, because *bad* people do drugs. They have illigitimate children, because *bad* people fuck strangers. They smoke, *bad* people smoke. They cheat on their taxes, *bad* people cheat on their taxes. They're abusive, *bad* people are abusive. They listen to rock, *bad* people listen to rock. They join the army, *bad* people support men's ambitions here on earth. They commit suicide, *bad* people commit suicide.

I am not being facetious on 'ex-JWs become *bad* people'. There are stats on this, my personal experience tells me this. Of all the children i grew up with, all are either still JWs in some sense or degree, or they are burnouts. If i started on all the people i know who literally destroyed themselves and everyone they could reach on their way down, i couldn't stop for days, because these things are true.

In our progress-centered society, it is a virtue to have goals, plans, and ideas about the future.

I don't. That's as bad as i get.

And as long as i don't take anyone down with me, i think that's okay.

I'll try to remember my "danger" sign next time someone makes eyes at me.

O yi Donna! I got your package. How i do love chocolate. How i do love your collages. How i do love earrings. How well you do know me, ay! Let's see, suspicions accurate, though sentiments doubtful. More detail in writing, claro, m'dear. And of course, viceful!

5 Step Program for the Crystal Addict:
[1] Combinations of a single rotation axis perpendicular to the paper with or without perpendicular mirror lines (=mirror planes perpendicular to the paper) give us the ten 2-D point groups.

[2] Add center of inversion, rotoinversion axes, perpendicular mirrors, and additional axes of rotation to the first 10 point groups causing the list to balloon to the 32 3-D point groups or Crystal Classes.

Add Lattices:
[3] Examine the five 2-D plane lattices and explore the result of combining these lattices with the 10, 2-D point groups forming the 17, 2-D plane groups. [wallpaper]

[4] Form the 14 3-D (Bravais) lattices from the five 2-D lattices and touch on the result of combining these with the 32, 3-D point groups: the 230, 3-D space groups. (Here we would also add the glide plane and the screw axis to our symmetry "tool kit").

[5] So that we can communicate with other mineralogists about these phantastic phenomena: Define crystallographic axes for the point groups and catalog their angular relationships and axial ratios.

Earth Materials is so much dern fun!

The state of the blog has changed. Thanks Bekah! I think you did a great job.
There's a little more in the works, but not much. Also, the photos button to your right is a lie, but some of my old collages are online now, graciously hosted by Bekah.

Hot Latin Wind.
no, not the usual one. I need a smoke, sans anything sharpened.
Donna?
Ay, the fun i do find!

you look like yer mother *crack yer bones*

ARGH. The printer in here is not working and i have an assignment due in 10 minutes. I think i will complain to the peanut gallery rather than rushing about and trying to find another printer. But my TA is awesome so maybe it won't be that big of a deal.

I was born with a finite amount of hurrying power. Wait, just kidding, that's Rachel.

My mom and my sister were here all weekend, making for a very long weekend. Pepper spray was suggested, and at about noon on Saturday it really began to sound like a good idea. Remind me to invest.

Donna, i have begun to wonder about you. Um, i am not sure if i will be in EC this weekend after all. Apperently Carla's car is really full and something about Tomah... *irritated*. I could take greyhound, but $35 is tons with no job prospects on the horizon. Maybe i'll hitchhike, i do have a towel after all.

I saw Glen & Dave this weekend, which was bizarre because i forgot they'd be in town. It was nice, and le Whiny one didn't seem too down. Very good thing, ey? Star Wars and gyros....

I also saw Mike E. while i was driving my mom's car yesterday, and he looked really confused. I don't think he knows i've transferred here.

Also, Brian, you're right. Newton was a Unitarian. If that's not bizarre i don't know what is. (list)

My sister & I sung Soul Coughing's 'science' song all weekend, and it's still in my head:
"I don't mynd worry following me like a dinosaur
I don't feel i am descending into the molten core
So far i have not found a science
but the numbers keep on circling me yeah
(repeat ad infintum)"

I misplaced the album, and now i really want to listen to the rest of it. Ay. Two years ago the lead singer was in EC and i didn't go see him. I will never find peace.

also, Rachel. are you aware that i have school on Monday? My roommate is fine with you guys staying here Sunday night too, but it would serve little purpose. I'll call mom tommorroww.

Also, if you get a chance and want to be a dear, in my closet are three large black tagboard-things and a blue folder with green marker writing on it (should be leaning on the left wall, below the "syod" writing). They're half-finished collages that i very optimistically want to get done this spring yet. So if you grab them and don't let them get dirty i'd be eternally grateful. I promise next time i move out to be more organized.

"*blah blah blah* What's osmosis?"

A very valid question.

In any case, some of my financial woes are being solved by my daddy. After he went on to Belize rather than paying tuition two weeks ago, i despaired of having this semester (or next year, yo) e'er paid for. But he really came through on this one. And he came back from Belize, doncha worry.

Though i should still get a job.

Oh man, i could have sworn that the vagina monolouges girl would be Mary. Wellya baeby you're still infamous in my world, and the raunchiest Cath'lic around.

Also! Beth! I'm in Liz Waters--why? Because it's the only dorm i knew anything about, because of you. Come find me! Or perhaps i'll attempt to spell your last name and find you.

God, reading my tagboard is dangerous. I get Liam Lynche's Frankie Forcefield song (if it can even be called a song) in my head every time. Thanks Rach. Forcefield! Forcefield!

Someday, Angeline

My favorite character in any book is Taleswapper from the Alvin Journeyman series by Orson Scott Card. The main reason i like him is because he doesn't belong in a book, his profession and entire life exist because books weren't common in the story's setting. He seems like an amazing person to spend time with, but not someone who you'd ever be able to hold on to. He comes and goes as he tells his stories, or rather as Card needs him in the story.

I wish i could share Evan's enthusiasm for old texts, because everything he says about them is true. But at a whole other level, something about writing itself bothers me. Knowledge isn't linear, but of course books are normally read front to back. Abstraction (i.e. letters) isn't natural (easy) for us to learn; the fact that you think it is shows how far we've come. Our tracking skill lends itself too easily to literacy, yet this is not what it evolved for.

I have spent too much time with people in books--i could list them like my friends, and visit them on weekends. I've found blue with Kira, swam with Morning Girl, was confused with Anna, imagined Theo's freedom, got advice from Claudia, cried for Lydia. I don't really believe Davy was hurt; because i sympathesized too much with the narrator, i wanted the story to be my own. The problem here, of course, is that she told it truer than i would have, her lies closer to my truth. I don't want to be fooled with the Socratic method.

Was Huck Finn the first to know that literature can lie? He was the first to admit such was possible.

Imagine what it must have been like, to be one of those first people to write cuniform. Or one of the very first Greeks to learn the Phoenican alphabet, its symbolism lost in translation.

Or Diderot holding the first bookmark.

Make no mistake; Plato became Plato for a real good reason, and we are just the same.

But i'm a hypocrite, no? We don't become Taleswappers by typing all day, and yet here i am again at the old blog. But i read much less now than i did when i was young(er)--maybe i subconsciously act on my annoyance.

Someday, Angeline.

Store High In Transet (preferably just beyond my reach)

Get it? There is nothing like some shipping lore early in the morning.

Mary~ I think you're infamous. Two years ago, did you do a farrago with The Vagina Monolouges and a reading from Cunt? It sounds so familiar it must be you (or Tony or Allison). A girl in my acting class was talking about it this morning, and i was very tempted to say, oh! i know that girl, she's such a dear.

WWJD? (version 2.0)

I have no idea what Juana would do. More research is in order, m'dear. I'm on it.

I think guilt would be one of the first things to go when you're insane. Or at least i'd hope so.

Perhaps we need to dress more extravagantly. Ruffles are the pangea.

*edit* 2001, Spanish with English subtitles: "Mad Love" story of Juana la Loca. Shall we? It looks very good. There is also a 1909 version and a 1948 version. Oh, to get my hands on that! (this is when i wonder why spanish cinema is generally so bad when they have real life people like juana. these movies better not suck). */edit*

It's hard to fly with the eagles in the morning if you're up with the turkeys all night.

That's a dad quote, and i think of it because i got very little sleep last night. However, i got back to my dorm half an hour ago and my roommate is still asleep. Yes, folks back home, there is somebody in this world who sleeps more than me, and i live with her. I really like Heather, actually. We both love Tori and sledding on trays, what more could i ask for?

Time for a quote from a more universially recognized source than my dad, Thich Nhat Hanh:
" The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth in the present moment, to appreciate teh peace and beauty that are available now. It is not a matter of faith; it is a matter of practise."

I went to a MUUYACM retreat last night/today, and the theme this time was heroes. I don't know why, exactly, but i don't really have any heroes. I think i have too narrow of a definition of heroes, so usually when i'm asked i say i admire Ani DiFranco, Elenor of Aquitine, Joeseph Campbell, et cetera... i mean there are plenty of people whom i really do admire, but then if you get down to the specifics i don't really emulate. Ani, por ejemplo, is one of the most amazing people alive today. She is the most inspired singer i am aware of, but some of her personal decisions i wouldn't be comfortable with. I love her, perhaps a wee bit too much, but she's not my hero. She says that she doesn't want to be a hero, and i respect that also, so maybe it's a moot point concerning Ani. But the argument follows with different particulars for lots of people.

Anyway, UU stuff. It was very fun, though i think i was the only first-timer there. We did many spiritual readings thingys and personal growth thingys and discussing our heroes thingys (reminds me of a Utah Phillips quote: "ask a kid, who are your heroes? And they're going to list fakes: *cartoon/tv characters here* BUGS BUNNY. What's wrong with real live hero? Grandpa? Mother Jones?") and crafty thingy things. Note to the wise: sparkly felt, feathers, googly eyes, and the bible DO NOT MIX.

But once my art disasters were cleared away, all was relaxation and such and FIREPLACE.

To quote a friend of mine (Felix, laconic math major, bald, very long beard), "FIRE."

Admittedly, that comment was much funnier in context.

It's good to know people here, and I was especially happy because BethAnne from EC is also here, and neither of knew the other was moving to Madison. Great communication skills, i know. I think it has something to do with the fact that i randomly speak in Spanish and she randomly speaks in German and the only place we overlap is three Japanese phrases in common; HOWEVER, it is awesome that she is here. Technically we both are fluent in English, but what a boring language, agreed?

Insane is spelled Insane, hon.

No dancing at Rocky Horror? What? Horror! I don't think it was really Rocky Horror in that case.

Oh, and that Tshirt idea is AMAZING. I WANT ONE TOO. But it doesn't really need the Wal*mart reference; that's almost overkill, really. And good job on your temps! My only driving advice is to not crash as often as i did, because it's expensive, and to learn how to jump your car immediately.

interesting stats (i think so anyway)

"How many preaching hours does it take to convert a person to a Jehovah's Witness?

Top and bottom 20 countries of the ratio of one baptism to hours. The higher the ratio, the longer hours are needed to convert to Jehovah's Witnesses. For example, in Japan, it takes about 18,000 hours of preaching to gain one baptism, whereas in Nepal it takes only 2000 hours."

(Scroll halfway down the page for this particular graph)

On a Thursday

Thursdays are very quickly becoming my favorite day of the week. I have my two fun classes, then much time off, then my fun class discussion, and then finally Muuyacm. Yes, church can be a good time.

It is gorgeous out, i should be sledding right now.

Yesterday my dorm has a fire drill, which i am told happens often here. My roommate, Heather, and i made a snow castle because the snow didn't have enough pack to it to make a snow man. It's kind of lop-sided, but you can see it has spirit.

That is correct. A nobel peace prize for the president.

  Fair trade vs. free trade.
Fair trade vs. free trade.

I met a guy from CFACT (collegians for a constructive tomorrow) yesterday, and though he was very enthusiastic and at first it seemed like we may have similar issues, i haven't decided on the whole fair trade vs. free trade thing yet.

Given that capitalism works so that every member is encouraged to innovate and do their best, in the long run a capitialist system will yield happy productive people living in a safe environment. It makes sense microcosmically: if you do a good job, you get paid well. Hours+effort=reward.

But in my experience, this doesn't hold true. People are unevenly rewarded, ideas are stolen; oppurtunity itself is not distributed well. Over the long run, has capitalism worked? It seems as though we regard as the least of many evils, but how could every possible system ever created not work?

Nineteenth-20th century environmentalism was originally at odds with capitalism: they wanted out of the system, or better yet, to see the system fall. But in the last few years there has been a compromise, ecoeconomists saying we should work within the system to acheive something. I find myself sympathetic to this, but probably because it's a whole lot easier starting on the same foot with people (we're both capitalists, you want to make money, i'd like to make money and save the planet too! blah!). Compromise can be concession to something below us, something lesser. I worry that the strengths of environmentalism and the strengths of capitalism are lost when they compromise; but given that we have a capitalist system that isn't going to change in this country anytime soon, and given that the environment is the most important issue addressing us today, compromise is necessary.

"We've all got to shop, why not do it with a conscious?" (Serrv International)

I wish i could be like Ani:
"I never compromise
I never avert my eyes
so never never mind
the poetry"

It's a mantra in my head that i feel i must solve; fair trade free trade, fair trade free trade, fair trade free trade, though i know the best mynds of my generation have been at it longer than i.
