Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)
29 jul 2005

Wendesday:
Dad: "You see, it's funny because it's not funny but someone thinks it's funny anyway."
Me: "And i spent 22 years wondering how you & mom made it through a first date."

Thursday:
Dad: "Don't get hit by a train, girls."
RGE" "Do you want me to stand behind a trash can?"

[later]:the worst insult of all time:
RGE: "Your face!"
me: "My face inspires poetry."
RGE: "Your face... inpspires... poetry."
*door slams*

Friday: Won trip to Hawai'i in January as consolation for spending May-July in New Jersey.

So i stressed a lil' more than needed over my poster, but even after discovering three typos (not only did i spell 'extinction' wrong, i spelled my advisor's name wrong---and she's not Polish or Chinese or anything that would give me an excuse about that one) it turned out okay.

That last post was the final official whiny "i hate NJ" post; leaving soon! Yesterday dad, RGE & me explored Manhattan some more, geocaching and such and saw Rent. Oh yes. On Broadway.

Got me some more family-fun-time all over for the next few days.

i'll be back in EC next Thursday.

then i shall start a bonfire or a riot or both. or tap some phone lines. can't decide just yet... but i'll probably just follow my cat around the house.

When i don't [can't] sleep, my mynd the next day can only focus on one subject at a time. Usually that subject is "Woe is me, woe is me, i'm going to chew my arms off, woes is me...." but luckily the one subject i can hold today is "Mid-depth waters were the oldest! and this is how we know that! and this is what it means! [gives examples]"

i'm-a-all-dones with my poster.

i just realized that in addition to not sleeping, i haven't eaten in awhile either.

Not that i have any food.

26 jul 2005

Jazz hands down the hallway!

My data came to me last night at 2 a.m.! And it's not a total mess! i am just so happy i did jazz hands all down the hallway, and some grad student said, 'why are you so happy?' and i said, 'well, i have proven that ocean circulation was slower in the last ice age AND i'm going to Wisconsin tommorrow!'

Neither of which is exactly true, but don't spoil my good mood now. [more data is always needed for "proof," and i'm not actually going to Wi until... Tuesday? i don't even know.]

And i can't leave soon enough: the food i have left is limited to:
--1 can of pears
--1/4 gallon milk
--potatoes that have looked sketchy since early June
--mystery noodles (purchased at Asian food store on a whim)
--1 vegetarian "burger patty;" also very sketchy-and-freezerburned

In other fun-ness, my mom got a German Shepard. i'm not sure how all that will work out (my mom's a bit... not prepared to train a big dog) but apparently my stepdad likes it.

tomorroww m'daddy-o & RGE will be here...!

but no cartwheels down the turnpike [just yet]

another *beep* day in New Jersey:
Angie: "Thursday, Dan; Friday, Chris; Saturday, I'm a whore!"

New Jersey doesn't all suck: roomie Rachel, Southern Boy Adam, and the NJites themselves Angie & Ali have been keeping me amused.

However.

i am positively bursting with frusteration. My poster isn't very good, and my data still isn't here yet. It's supposed to be here tonight. Around midnight. The posters are due tommorrow, but i got an extension till Wendesday.

The graphing in excel/pasting that into powerpoint sounds so easy, but it's not working. i suck.

WOCE stations, now where did you come from? i am so confused.

i did end up going to Manhattan on Saturday. Twas fun, but actually this poster is turning out to be more hassle than i expected. i should have worked on it this weekend.

As if it were some sort of evil consolation, most of the other interns are having final presentation problems also. A computre imploded: two months of work gone (i'm sad about this one, it was a neat-o project on fluid flow around hydrothermal vents). Some experiments aren't working; one intern is doing her experiment today; she's on the boat tommorrow (and her MatLab imploded too!). The list really could go on but this overview is already depressing me.

Just kidding. Adam is completely done.

RIOS 2005: sounds like an amazing idea; but a bit disorganized.
i got a great advisor; quite lucky.
Then i totally struck out in the C14 gamble.

Anyway.

Today i shall pack. i cannot-wait-to-get-home.

home home home... i am kind of a whimp when we get right down to it.

Ouuuuuh! Plans for August! August, baeby, August!
1. family fun time all over! including: NYC museums (AMNH, Moma), Sandy Hook, (Toledo) Ohio, and onto Wisconsin!
2. probable* Canadian Blast! with Anthony Endover, Bambi, and whatever Bryan's nickname is!
3. drive-by kidnapping of Elyse from Milwaukee!
4. (maybe) returning Elyse to Milwaukee (so Broadway paper doesn't get mad)
5. collaging with Donna!
6. drinking coffee with Donna!
7. knitting with my probable daughter! (hi MaRy, i recently learned howtoknit)
8. speaking of MaRy, CATASTROPHE
9. donate plasma twice a week: spending money
10. move from Eau Claire to Stanley and then to Madison, all without a car!
11. stealing RGE's car as often as possible as nicely as possible
12. biking around EC everyday because (11.) won't work
13. lounge about help out lots on the farm
14. camping trip to the UP with Nik, Ian, Kirk, Bekah & co.: August 22nd-??
15. a minimum of 22 theme parties cohosted with RGE
16. Bryan's 19th, Bekah's 21st, and associated activities
17. lots of quality time with Thomas! among life's chaos, i love my kitty the most
18. that's not nearly all, but i'm exhausted just looking at this list
19. and: start school.

*me: i, too, am impressed with our decision not to decide.
Bryan: I'll assume that sentence that I didn't understand was you saying how cool I am!
me: Oh, of course. i'd love to continue this; however, i should go... sleep....
Bryan: Why?
me: Can you fathom my time zone?
Bryan: No! I'm talking to the future!

poetry of omission

And still i wait. My data's not back, but my "boss" hasn't been here in two days so i got to sleep in. In fact, i slept in so much i will do that really cool trick of losing a day (i.e., circadian cycles not even in the ballpark of the 24hourHalocene day/night cycle).

The roomies want to go to NYC tommorroww, but as i'll be there next Thursday (and possibly even more the following weekend) i for once would rather lounge about this noise pollution hell.

The only thing i will miss about NJ is my ghetto grocery store.

21 jul 2005

what is it that i'm recovering from?

Thursday: quote DNA, take the damn bus to Busch, panic, panic, panic

Why panic? It's not like i actually have that much to do. i'm still waiting for my real chunk-o'-data to return to me; i have until Wendesday at 5 o'clock to turn in that half-done poster; my "boss" won't be here tommorroww so i can sleep in & do my computre work then.

Only a WEEK until the "fam" gets here, only a WEEK until we tourist-it-up in NYC & Sandy Hook (that's the plan right, RGE? i've already been there & i like it); only two WEEKS until the Eau of Claire again i smell.

That was a sub-par pun.

Sorry.

Only a YEAR until i (fake) graduate. This school year shall be awesome, and thinking about what-to-do after that is just too exciting. i need to conference with a few people before any real decisions are made. i'm thinking i want to go to grad school in one of these three places; i shall also apply here for humour value & here for bitterness value.

And yes, i do have really cool alternate plans to mo' school.

i'm twenty-two; and though i will do the traditional late July/early August thing of accidently lying about my age, i just can't believe i made it this far. i feel like i should make a five-year plan or something... but then again i don't need more proof that i'm a closet communist.

Thanks everybody for ze birthday wishes!

"Time on your side but will never render
The most beautiful thing you can ever spend
But you work in a shirt with a nametag on it
Drifting apart like a plate tectonic"
--Kaiser Chiefs, Oh My God--

18 jul 2005

when i'm sitting on my non-euclidean porch someday
i'll quote things like this:

"Self-reference is the most powerful type of recursion. The ability of a system to reflect on itself is at the heart of both the limits of mathematical computation as well as our subjective experience of consciousness. But there are relatively trivial applications of self-reference as well (one can always use a blowtorch to light a candle)." --Ron Eglash--

which i find funny. But not as funny as RR found my comment: "Welcome to my life: yet another rejected episode of Will & Grace."

Welcome to Cook Campus: certified noise pollution hell

As i alluded in the previous post, this place is loud. Today, seven a.m., some idiot maintenance men found it appropriate to cut the lawn right behind our apartments. Even my roommate woke up to this one. After two months of my insomniatic self living with her, i know the girl can sleep through anything*.

So i walked around. An hour later i still had not found anywhere more than half a block away from 1. construction 2. lawnmowers 3. the turnpike 4. hockey tournaments or 5. broken ac vents. i fucking hate this campus.

And no, i didn't give up after just an hour. i have explored everywhere else within walking distance already.

*including one awesome night a few weeks ago that went like this:
1:15 a.m. realize it's past 10 & should sleep; finally turn off music videos
1:48 a.m. drop pile of hard-bound books while looking for something
2:37 a.m. really loud ring of phone call from Byran
2:43 a.m. loud exclamation of, "Though i truly value your drunken status reports, dear, CAN YOU FATHOM MY TIME ZONE?!"
3:12 a.m. drop more things loudly while putting away cell
4:22 a.m. car alarm
4:51 a.m. car alarm stops; group of men walk past our window arguing
5:26 a.m. stray cat with damaged tail announces his unfortunate story to the neighborhood
5:29 a.m. another cat takes contest with which cat has more unfortunate life
6:18 a.m. i give up searching for sleep; shower
7:34 a.m. pipes stop clicking
7:35 a.m. smash jar while preparing coffee

what passes for weird in these circles

A phone call or two from home, you wouldn't believe the news (but it's not myne to report).

The sky seems to have forgotten it is summer: this does not bode well for our day on the shore tomorroww.

but what i wouldn't give for some good old-fashioned banter
from those boys who surprise me (ya'll know who you are)
stories that never end; just get interrupted
and after years together i can say: i don't know any facts
here i walk to my ghetto gas-station and buy some milk and a toothbrush
somehow in the NJ-Massachusetts-NJ odyssey i lost my Chinese toothpaste
turnpike roars a block away--much less hellish than construction
which is the best thing about Saturdays
"if there's anything i've learned
in all these years on my own
it's how to find my own way there
and my own way back home" --Ani--
solitude creating greed
if only i was less psychic
if only the world was less predictable
if only i were wrong more often.

and then another thing: upsetting. [but in the end, not my business.] Unfair questions, i forgot; won't repeat (i just want to be done).

Let us always be at Heckel's when it's three a.m.
or getting kicked out of graveyards hours from an airport drop-off
Let me drop something i can't replace through the cracks of your porch
and let the mud-covered cars park us in so we can't go home
Let the roar that i hear be the Ocean of Doom from your backyard
while we manually copy/paste colours on a jar or spiral notebook

"How dare you have an identity crisis while i'm making your lunch!"

"Those who see any difference between soul and body have neither." --Oscar Wilde--

Maybe it was a weird thing to do.

give me more coffee
and tell me another story

i also went swimming in the Atlantic/climbing on rocks with my cousins, who also happened to be on Cape Cod last week (this was odd, as i've for years had an open invitation to visit them in Boston, but have never gotten out there. Mere days before i left, i finally got ahold of them, and it turned out they were only a half hour away or so) though i didn't take any pictures zat day. i also got talked out of going to grad school by a JP student, which was funny. Trust me.

*all dates given in radiocarbon years. Of course that's precise.

Oh, softer world....

the homogenization of culture and another day of your freaky accent

If i did a concept blog it'd be like Tori Amos doing a concept album: totally unnecessary. Tori is always concept. So is my damn blog. i'd like to think it reflects the things i'm doing: yeah, that's right, becoming a scientist. But then i sit down to type and the things i'm humming come out instead. So Tori's new album is all nature-rific-concepty, and while i really, really like Tori, her singing, her songwriting, et cetera, i don't think she needs to explain herself in "concept." Everything she's written has always been "concept" whether she states that explicitly or not (the concept being be very personal and never make any sense).

i think i just typed that whole paragraph to tell you i'm going to say things like "incidentally" less often: because everything i say is incidental.

Oh, and i'm back in Jersey. Yay.

i loved Woods Hole, told my mother so, and now she thinks that's where i'm going for grad school. She is just so funny!

While i was there, i saw the very core that the Alvarezes first identified the iridium anomaly in (in like 1979)!

Don't be too jealous.

And i got even more excited about some lake Titicaca cores that they charted the Medieval Warm Period in in South America.

But you see, that's what geologists get to do: touch the day the dinosaurs died.

Rockfest or an Assembly? Why is this even a question?

Rockfest with Tom Petty, even.

Tom Petty, Rachel!

In "fam" news, kimmy! is no longer with us (no, she didn't die, they broke up).

In "life in New Jersey is really, really boring news," i spent all week doing not much and it goes like this:

There's an old joke that says: "Never lend a Geologist money. He'll take a million years to pay you back! Um de har har!" It's as old as the hills, or at least the people who study the hills. Or 1953. Whatever. A corallary of this is to not tell some geologists to call you back early next week.

Because it'll take much, much longer than that.

After nearly a week of putzing around uselessly on this campus, waiting for said call, i finally took my samples over to the other campus (which is towns away, no joke) and marched into that Geology building and said, Hey! i want to use your mass spec! Now! but that didn't work too well because the geologist in question wasn't actually there. So... i left them there, with a nice explanatory note... [long boring bit, lunch, dentist appointment, rain, car trouble] and the point of this story is that there was much more running around than there needed to be, but i got them done today! i'll have some numbers next week!

i didn't loose a single cibicidoides and am quite proud of myself.

You should be too.

Massachusetts: six a.m.

therefore: packing, sleeping

In good news, my mom's little house is officially not condemned anymore.

two days in a row: lots of pixels/little content. what is (Letters to Myself) coming to?

One day back in May:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Thomas thought he was safe.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
But he wasn't.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
It was nineteen-twenty-three

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
and all the Rachels and Sarahs came out to play*.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
They saw people they hadn't seen since seventh grade

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
and debated about whether or not Dave looks like Nate.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
When the bored face was made, all could see it was true (but then there was no consensus on which Nate, exactly, we were all talking about).

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Ben brought the jazz,

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Ian selected the drinks,

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
and Kirk was as annoyed as usual.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Adam showed up, and all were pleased.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Some dude calling himself Darth was there too, apparently from the future.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
This was all so chaotic that Jon spent some quality time contemplating the fire

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
while Bryan indulged in some contraband goods...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
and to this day no-one knows exactly what Tasha was doing.

What is going on?!

[London got bombed... via Kevin, because it is becoming clear that my only function as a blogger is to copy/paste from the more eloquent and to type the funny things my friends say.]

In response to RGE on Minnesota, they're having budget crisi. Yay.

Because of the magic of a digital camera and absolutely nothing to do today, i'd like to tell ya'll a little story about the afternoon of May 17th:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Justin: "Oh, this summer will be so relaxing."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Donna: "I'll toast to that!"

Me: "This was a nice week, I'll see ya'll again in August..."
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"What do you mean you're leaving?? What will i do??"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Justin: "Hey Donna! Did you realize Sarah is leaving us?"
Donna: "OH NO! OH NO!"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Rachel: "Well, I for one will play with kittens."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"But I won't be happy about it."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"On second thought, sarah's kinda obnoxious...."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Bryan: "Oh, I agree. I shall smoke and entertain Spaniards. Who needs Sarah?"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"And then I shall smoke some more. Empire!"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Bones: "Sarah who? I have a cat and some smokes myself."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Rachel (magically back at Racy's): "Yeah, whatever."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"I will always have my coffee. Ack! I can't wait for Sarah to leave so she'll stop with the camera flashing!"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Me: "Well, at least i know Justin misses me."

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Justin: "Fooled ya again!"
