In sooth, I learned never rhetoric; a thing that I speak must be plain and bare. --chaucer, franklin's tale

Me extrano a Elyse mucho. Donde estas? Adonde vas? Escribame!

I just gave Alex his dice back. This is me thanking Nik for Alex. Thanks Nik. Alex is very happy. It puts a spring in his step. Now he can actually game.

I'm at Alex's dorm now. Alex & Greg are playing video games. I think that's all they do. Alex's computer is a bit confusing too. Actually, it's wonderful, I'm just completely inept. I like it here. I wish I lived on campus. I am very, very tired. But I don't have to wake up till 8. Maybe I'll have some more crazy real dreams.

I keep remembering my cousin John's voice, talking to me two years ago. "You don't realize how good a school UWEC is. If you really want to go to Madison, do it right away. If you really want to get out of the Midwest, do it right away. I was going to transfer after two years, but that never happens-- no matter how much you mean too. I wish I had, a degree from UM or some other engineering U would have helped so much by now...." blah blah blah. He works at 3M & is going back for a master's.

Terribly useful Japanese word of the day:
kirisute gomen, I killed him but I have the right to; excuse me.
Say this if you're a samarai & you honourably kill someone to your spectators.

Today was crazy long. I'm beating Nik's keyboard! Ah! File opens! This tech nol o gy is too much for me.

Tonight I sleep at Alex's. I really wish I lived on campus. Then I'd be a real college student. (please read that remembering Pinoccio's voice, "a real boy"). I told my dad I want to live on campus next semester... but he's all, go ahead. I'm not gonna stop you. But I'm not gonna pay for it. I'm all, how am I suppossed to pay for it? Jesus Christ. Actually, since I think I've decided on a major I think it'd be alright to take out student loans. Then I could easily afford it. Hmmm.

I really like my sleep schedule right now. I can actually remember my dreams. It gets really confusing, I think things happened that I only dreamed about. One thing I do quite a bit is make up locations. I have all these buildings in my mind that I've never seen or been in, but know so well. So I'm at this train station yesterday, then some guy comes up & asks to take my picture. Then the next scene, I get this photo in the mail, with directions to the ferry to tory island. It's the freaking king! So I go there, & all the tory islanders are like, this girl really wants to learn how to surf. I'm okay with this, but we surf all the way to Australia, except it's 1775 & we get lost in the rainforest, and we know the only way to get home is by surfing, but some crazy wombat stole the boards to build a rocket launcher, then Ron Kind's there, all, I'm a good democrat! Then some girl tells me Mark Twain is a crappy author.... & I never met the king!

Now Nate is here (yes, go to his webpage. Although a vegetarian, I'd venture to guess it's delicious). He's in his cool-aid halloween costume. How appropriate. He likes Nik's free phone.

I'm so afraid. This computer is going to eat me alive. And it's going to do in size 36 font that I can't make go away.

Sarah's word of the day: Meniscus, n.,
1 : a concavo-convex lens
2 : a crescent or crescent-shaped body
3 : the curved upper surface of a column of liquid
4 : a fibrous cartilage within a joint especially of the knee
I like it because it's a word everybody knows, but never uses. I think we should all use it more often.

I think I've finally decided what I want to do. Major in ENPH & minor in linquistics, to get my TEFL certificate. Hm. This is very strange. I know exactly what I want to do. The only thing is, it involves staying at UWEC. Seriously, I looked into it last night-- no other schools in these parts have these two programs! That's okay, though. Between studying abroad next year, and maybe doing National Exchange later, I won't really be here to exhaustion. Eau Claire rocks anyway, once you get down to it. (we're up to something FUNN!!!!) Except for this whole living with my family thing-o...... sucks.

I'm excited. I'm so happy EC offers the TEFL/TESOL certificate program. So easy, baebe. After I graduate, I'm going to go teach English in South America, or some South Pacific island. Somewhere. I like the program lots. It's only 25 credits, but it's all linquisitc classes, and two teaching courses, intercultural exchanges something. All very interesting, & my Spanish will count towards it. ENPH is awesome too, concrete knowledge that I want to know anyway. There is a lot of Chemistry, so we'll see how that goes. I'm already done with the math & physics & english requirements here, so that's very very cool. Environmental conditions & their effect on people (or vice versa) is what it's all about. I was thinking about Biology, or Physics, or the Engineering/Physics dual degree thing, but I like this; it's still science, but it involves itself more immediately in the real world. (interesting, that's where I happen to live) I'm not sure I'd really want to work for a gov'ment agency, though. So maybe just travel & teach for a few years, then come back & get a master's from Madison or elsewhere (far, far away)

(hopefully) class schedule, next semester, & credits:
ENPH 210, 3
SPAN 202, 4
ENG 225, 3
BIO 110, 4
FLG 378, 3
total: 17

All these classes are directly related to either my major or my minor, but they also are classes I'd like to take anyway. The theory I go by in choosing classes (or any activity for that matter.... no, it's not the fish in a bucket thing!) is to do what's interesting. It's really cool that what's interesting to me for once coincides with a rational plan of action.

One little known fact is Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much... the wheel, New York, wars, and so on, whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely the dolphins believed themselves to be more intelligent than man for precisely the same reasons.

"`Hey this is terrific!' Zaphod said. `Someone down there is trying to kill us!'
`Terrific,' said Arthur.
`But don't you see what this means?'
`Yes. We are going to die.'
`Yes, but apart from that.'
`APART from that?'
`It means we must be on to something!'
`How soon can we get off it?'"

I sign up for my spring semester classes Thursday. I have to start deciding what I want to major in! Meshugaas. I've been thinking about Environmental & Public Health, which is a very very good program here. The thing is, Madison doesn't offer it. I don't want to start it, like it, and then want to stay here because of it. Madison does, however, have a certificate program in environmental studies. Maybe I could major in civil engineering & get the certificate, & it will all work out the same. Except with more math. Ug.

Studying abroad next year is really screwing up the whole 4 years of college thing. I know lots of people on the 5 year plan, but I don't want to do this forever. I do hope I get accepted, but sometimes I just want to be done with school. I'm sick of working crappy part time jobs. Actually I could just quit both, and sit around all day. It'd work the same, money wise. In the short run, anyway.

Actually, I discovered one very very cool thing today. Madison has a gajillion study abroad programs, so if I don't get accepted to Kansai Gaidai this year, I'll just go somewhere even cooler later. Ha, take that.

I dreamed last night about death. It was very strange, I wasn't upset at all. I was also living in the Australian outback; I'm not sure what that means. I think it may be from the phrase "it brings death dancing out of anonymous side streets" that keeps running through my head. Thanks, Ani. I always remember the guy at the funeral home last year, talking about how coffins are made. They're all metal now! That really bothers me. Who wants to be wrapped in tin-foil for eternity?

Yesterday while Kyle & Tony & Crawford were talking, children came up. Tony said he doesn't want kids, because he can never love someone simply because they are a member of his family. He cannot love someone unconditionally because he sees their faults. I love people unconditionally, but later I see their faults. This leads to me being disappointed in people when I discover their true motives.

I’m not sure which is better. To begin disappointed, or to end up that way.* Not everybody disappoints me, and if they do it’s usually because I painted just too big a picture around them. When I meet a person, I see how they look, hear what they say, and assume they are complete unto themselves. Revelation of the month: Not everybody is.

I can just hear Rachel’s voice, “Tony’s just cynical, that bitter dyke”. (I don’t get the ‘bitter dyke’ thing. Someone really should explain it to me.)

The thing is, Tony’s cynicism is one of the things I like most about him. I think being cynical is the most natural response to our culture. But being cynical on a personal level, to the people around you, just pushes people away. I think you have to differentiate between memes and the people who happen to believe them. The memes of our culture are certainly something to be cynical about. People aren’t.

My quote of the year sophomore year comes to mind. “we are all being fooled, though no one is fooling us”.

*Of course these aren't the only options. One could just not care, and thus never be dissappointed.

Blake is the root cause of all pain & suffering.

Today I went to a protest in Madison, against the war, and then onward to Rachel's house for the third annual Halloween party. I think this was the best yet. Smaller than usual, pretty much the normal crowd, but I heard Tony & Kyle talking philosophically, honestly; Mary & Sarah pondering having the entire genius population of MHS think they are lesbians, Gus dressed as Mia Jovovich, Alex hot as Bruce Lee, Tony hot as a half-ninja, & Rachel hot as Tank Girl. Teresa was hot too, probably just as herself. Mary & Sarah are always hot. Bekah & Nik were one via chain. Sam complemented my pioneerness & Evan complemented my hair (very shallow, I know, but I sometimes like these things). Barbie was there & it was great to see her. But to top it all off, Ian & Nate choose to battle Hammer Man & Nate's secret weapon, Nail Man. Jesus, those guys are hilarious. Hilarious.

Sam makes an excellent man-pillow, which I was really enjoying, untill Blake tickled me, filling my scalp with hair-knives, which attacked Sam, causing great pain and suffering. This is the reason Blake is the root cause of all pain and suffering. It all starts with the hair knives. I felt the need to avenge Sam's pain by kicking Blake, but according to Newton's second law, every action has an equal & opposite reaction, so the force that was applied to Blake via kick was also applied to Sam via push. It was all very unfortunate.

Then Blake elbowed Nate, Nate blamed me, I sought to defend the honour of my name, & it descended into chaos from there. Sam ended up off the couch, I on the floor, battling Blake with my feet while trying to steal his glasses with my hands, and Rebecca joined the fray by claiming Sam's spot for her own. Too bad Nate decided only three people fit on the couch! By the time Rachel came downstairs to break it up, I was attempting to wedge myself between Nate & Blake. And now I am at home, with Thomas on my lap & Sable fighting for control of the keyboard. Honestly, is there a worse place for a cat to like to sit?

I'll write more about the protest, bus ride, true love, & Hammer Man tommarroww when I awaken. Though not neccassarily in that order, becasue they cannot assume that order of importance.

"The price we pay for freedom is eternal vigilance"

I have no idea who said that, but whoever it was rocked. & was completely correct. This gets right to the root cause of why our commander in chief doesn't really represent America. Americans haven't been keeping a strong enough vigil. If you know who said that, tell me!! (armelleumay@care2.com) & I'll give you a cookie. Maybe I'll even bake you an entire pan of cookies. Or apple crisp. I make better apple crisp than cookies.

I've been thinking less & less about vagabonding it up lately & more & more about staying here & doing something worthwhile. I've realized I don't actually mind Wisconsin all that much. It's a swell place once you get right down to it.

My sister is driving me nuts. I don't know what to do about her. How do you give someone morals who's already been developed by TV? I don't know how this happened. She was raised exactly like me. How did we turn out so different?

Today while I took a shower, Thomas sat on a stack of clean towels I'd folded. When I came out of the shower, Thomas was sitting on the floor, under a heap of towels, looking very confused and very guilty. It was about the funniest thing I've ever seen.

Pretty!!

Jesus, if this actually works it'll be the first computer related thing I've ever done myself. I'm so not a child of the 90s. (or 80s, whatever) I really wish I had been born in 1900. Like Bea Schachter. That would have been cool. Then I'd be cool, & wouldn't have to act a character to be cool.

Thomas reeks today of flea-be-gone goo. Ewww, it's stinky. He is also sleeping on my left arm, which has fallen asleep. This makes typing a very interesting, almost hazardous, experience. I've learned to type around words that require too much of my left little pinkie. Thomas is almost like a stutter of the fingers. I normally like typing, because I only have to work around words I couldn't spell, not like in speaking where I can't pronounce "rural".
