grand questions
1. Why have i no patience?
2. Where is my bike?
two and a half weeks left of school, and i realize i have nothing done. i'm more than screwed, and am also not in my usual chipper mood due to other dumb things.
blah blah blah... What's osmosis?

the things we do as if they were normal
"Ward, the cat's eating your blood."The weekend at home was, as promised, quite crazy. I think that of all the people i know here in Madison, i myself am the most dramatic and crazy, so when i go home i am unused to dealing with other people's drama and excitement. Not that drama and excitement are ever bad thinngs, it's just that i am quite out of practise with them and even a few days of
discussing gossiping about all my dear ones' lives is a bit much.
the Weekend Summary:
Rachel & i did Thanksgiving day at Dad's house first, where my very knowledgeable grandmother informed us that Michigan, too, has peaches, then we did the Mom's cousin Thanksgiving th-ing where my rich Republican 8th cousin seriously angered me, though he probably is so old that he would ne'er have thought that there were any *gasp* liberals in the room. So we left, quickly. But they did have good cassarole.
Hey-sus, from there it is seriously all a blur. I spent a lot of time at the hizzouse, with
Bekah,
Glynis, Ian,
Blake, Adam & co., an afternoon at Racy's with
Rachel and
Rachel, a short errand-visit with Abbey who graciously helped me not suck at purchasing alchohol, watched some clone high one night and didn't sing along to
Once More With Feeling, took too many smoking breaks and drove around too much.
Saturday was intense in a way i am still recovering from. Bekah's party had so many people there that i had not seen in a very long while, and i left in the middle of it to go to Megan's, which was spectacular, but of course managed to miss some of the people i most wanted to see.
The food at Megan's warrents serious discussion as it was the most delicious that has ever existed.
Well, not quite as delicious as that sandwich that Rocky's Evan made for me back in the day, but that is the stuff of legend, and for now let us assume that all of the food eaten yesterday was real.
Some guy made amazing scalloped potatoes, Noah made many Nepali dishes, Amanda brougt French Confections, there was squash and apple pie and green beans and green beans in delicious goo and other-more-different squash and corn and pumpkin pie and many other things that i could not have possibly eaten, and Aryan had wine and Megan had ciggarettes and i filled myself up right full. I'm a damn glutton, now that i think about it. It was very fine, and i relaxed with
Donna who party-hopped with me and random members of the Racy's crew, and of course Leonard mumbled things that we all agreed with while Tron blinked in the backround. Sarah I.'s dog Heidi was there too, though i never saw my dear luvre Sable.
Back at Bekah's, everyone was there and it was crazy-fun. I missed the famous Hulk-hands battle, but did see Ward's wounds; i didn't get drunk but i did have many drunken conversations with... well, everyone; i didn't have much money but bought Topper's at 1am; i didn't have any gluesticks but i did worry about the table; i didn't plan on staying up late but finally drove myself home at 3... or so. All of which i find quite appropriate.
as great as it was to see everyone, i don't do well in large groups, so the parti-es were only that; seeing people (as compared to actually spending time with them). i fear sometimes that i am becoming less nice/sweet these days and more bitchy; or at least in the few days i get to be home i felt really bad about all the people i didn't spend any time with and all the people i just barely greeted. Perhaps i'm less of a socialite than i was back in the day, or perhaps i just can't be bothered.
In any case, i really was happy to see you all, even if it didn't make it into the Official Weekend Summary. (OWS, heh.)
And oh! Acoustic today was the Bomb. Really.
and also, you should all ask Ian about the funniest sentence ever uttered. It's so funny i myself cannot say it.
"Why'd you roll up that toothbrush, BethAnne? Why, BethAnne?"--Ben (BethAnne's brother)--
"You know what that is? That's a Pun."--Ian, in not even close to the funniest sentence ever, but Quite Epically delivered of course--
logistical errors and convenient carrying handlesThanksgiving has officially begun as i have leftover squash in my fridge.
This squash was prepared last night by myself, Courtney, Dave, Anna, Simon, Tibbets, and Craig... in other words, the officers of the Geology club who descended on Courtney's gracious clean not-dorm kitchen. It was fun, but i for some reason have not been in the mood to converse coherently. Hm, actually Simon is not an officer, he's a grad student at a whole different University entirely, but we like to hang out with him anyway. Last year i only really got to know two of the graduating seniors well, Simon & PGill, and for some reason both these people have turned out to be the people who still have reasons for being in Madison all the time. Which is nice, as i like them, but eerie in that way that Max used to be at the Auditorium at 3:00 back in the day, two years after he graduated. From high school.
i think if Craig were an animal he would be a ferret. I myself like ferrets quite a bit and think of them as the most noble, intelligent, curious and all-around entertaining animals, but Craig is quite insulted by this and just notes that they are smelly and weasly. So if anyone has any really good positive points on ferrets i need them for the argument.
i haven't been nearly as excited as i ought to be about Thanksgiving. I'm excited to see everyone, sure, but the fact is is that i'm only in town for 3 days and have 2 or so families, and 2 simultaneous parties Saturday already planned and in the end there won't be time for me to just relax. I also haven't been as lonely for the EC folk as i was last year, partly because some of you have (finally) learned of the wonders of the internet, but also because i've been much busier this year, know people here now, and was up north just two weeks ago.
but then again, today i for some reason felt the need to tell an acquaintance all about the ongoing 'What Philosopher Sucks the Most?' debates and other EC exclusives, and i'm realizing that i do miss many of you a lot. There is certainly something inexplicable about certain elements in our 'clique' (if you will) that is not found in the populace at large, and it is always an incredible relief to not feel like i have to act 'normal' [read: boring] for people to not give me that confused look constantly. So yes: vices and rants here i come. Thanksgiving break will be awesome.
Rachel, MaRy, Donna, Tony, Bryan, Glynis, Allison, et cetera: Megan H./Aryan/Sarah I./i are having a Vegetarian Thanksgiving Saturday at Megan's, you are all invited. Apparently Bekah's having a party on Saturday too, so we will talk about combining these or having different time frames for them.
smokescreens and the vibrancy of expression
"There are three levels of ignorance:
First level: We do not know the answer.
Second level: We do not know the question.
Third level: We do not know that there are questions."
-- Author Unknown
i stole that quote from the IES newsletter as it pertains to what i've been thinking about.
Namely:
to paraphrase someone important that i can't remember right now, we each take the limits of our own world for the limits of the whole world.
Well, not all of us:
i take the limits of my world as the inner limits of the whole world.
This is why it irks me when people don't know the most basic of historical facts, and furthurmore assume that since they don't know it's not important. Simply not true!
to paraphrase Einstein, possibly the most quoted man of the last century, the difference between what an ignorant man and the most educated among us know is very little compared to what there is to be known.
He had the hair and worked at Princeton, it must be true.
and i think that perhaps because i do know i know very little, i am at least somewhat qualified to become a scientist. Though i'm well on my way to obscure greatness in the Geological field, this is something i doubt quite often.
[edit: that last sentence is quite possibly the funniest i have ever written.]
"ze BREED!"
This is about the funniest site i have ever seen.

"as life gets longer/awful feels softer/well it feels pretty soft to me" --Modest Mouse--
I did nothing productive this weekend, but today i seem to have an extra day in which to do things. It would have helped if i had woken up before 4 p.m.... However, i believe my subconscious knew that i just don't feel like dealing with waking life, and i hope it will still know that soon when i decide to go back. To sleep, that is.
"i guess i just want to have good news to report/every time i come up for air" --Ani DiFranco--
death, taxes, and your frantic subconcious
How completely impossible it is for me to make plans. Back when i lived at home i commonly accounted for this sort of thing. One of my strongest memories is the time Tony & Bekah & i decided to go out to eat, but then at the last minute i could not, and Tony was very concerned. I found it quite odd that he should be concerned, but then again my position is the odd one. My life is insane, my family is insane, and should i try to explain concisely i would appear insane. So perhaps i am. Anyway, about the non-restaurant business four years ago we were in my driveway, and everyone was concerned. okay.
And the real problem is that when i live in a different county, i expect people to take care of their own problems in their own county, but this they cannot do. So the problems are brought to me at a point when a good giggle and some tea just don't cut it anymore. What can i do? I can't control the economy and i cannot control the past and i cannot control the cruelty everyone else had given you.
So clearly i'm not on my way to Georgia as i ought to be. Last minute plans i cannot do, but i never did my 113 homework anyway, so most of this is the practical sense was for naught. I am a total failure and any excuses wouldn't make sense, so suffice it to say it's a long story that the protagonist is completely sick of.

afternoon: go to FUS
evening: come home
i pretty much typed this out so my exhausted self can remember a bit of what the hell i did all weekend when i wasn't accomplishing anything. i'm really far behind in school, and it's going to suck. perhaps i can afford to do awfully for once as i usually did okay. Next weekend i am incredibly excited for the SOA protest, but incredibly frusterated that i probably can't go. I haven't stayed in Madison 2 consecutive weekends all semester, and i really need to do
some all of my labs. But SOA is important, i probably won't be able to go next year, and i'm signed up to go already.
the weekend was okay. i love seeing all the EC folk, JWs included somewhat. i technically did get back in time for Scott's installation at FUS, saw most of the speeches and such, and ate many good things. Trouble was, i was pretty mentally burnt out from hours of mom talk in the car.
"If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much space" --Jane Howard--

John: Who's that?
RR: My one true love!
John: But Rachel, you LOVE toast.
Sleep is such a lie.
There are many arguments for evolution, other than the quite obvious one that it is fact. But if you know nothing of science, let me tell you how i came to the conclusion that we evolved rather than were created by an all knowing superbeing who happened to be perfect: our bodies suck. They suck so much, they're practically unusable. They get old and die and refuse to sleep the night before a qualitative exam that i actually want to do good on, they turn red and flaky in too much sun and pasty opaque in too little and many of them lack fun things like eyes. The most especially sucky thing about them is they are not especially efficient, which as humans currently think effieciency is neat-o i would expect that any god that invented us in his own image would have at least done that for us. I mean, made us efficient.
Wouldn't it be more effiecient to be able to store sleep like we store fat? I could spend all of June and January each year sleeping, and then only have to sleep maybe once a week during school & work.
Well anyway, i came up with that a few weeks ago and have long thought i ought to share it with my adoring public. I have many more gross examples of why human bodies suck, but i'm sure you'd like to eat in the next few days. But to finish the argument, our evolutionary history makes perfect sense. The line that recently rose to us was very fortuitous and overall quite ugly, but they survived and give us many exciting things like the phantom pouch right above the uterus. Ha! Bet you didn't know you looked just like a kangaroo on the inside!
i really wish i hadn't said that, as now i have images of fetal kangaroos being really confused, and some Jim Carey scene in my head. I'll go listen to Modest Mouse now and woe myself to sleep.
Protomammals-->monotremata-->marsupials-->placentals!
biking blind and the seamstress in youIt all started back at Halloween, when my glasses broke and RR sewed them back together. Sewing glasses together worked surprisingly well, but of course all things must end. So my lens fell out again yesterday, and as i was in the process of biking home i just stuck them in my pocket and continued onward. As luck would have it, i immediately ran into (literally) some classmate from last year, who recognized me while i didn't recognize him. I tried to explain that without my glasses on i wouldn't recognize my own father, which makes sense as the man is in excess of six feet, three hundred pounds, and every fashion police handbook ever; but out of context made me sound even more flustered than necessary. It's not like i pulverized this guy with my bike, i was just trying to explain why i didn't recognize him even as i was frantically-not-hitting him. It was like a romantic comedy, except without both the romance and the comedy, just the clutziness and the weird punchlines that are hilarious only if you saw the beginning of the movie.
And while i'm on the subject, you should all know i have the most stylish bike and helmet combo in the world. Or rather, a 1985 safety-nut helmet and 2/3 of a 1964 Huffy.
Don't Cause Paralysis!
harvesting fruit in the middle of the night
I have two tests and much homework this week, and it's getting very hard to stay enthusiastic about things i barely understand. In good news, i randomly went to get coffee today, and saw a girl i know and ended up talking with her & a (literally) world-renowned expert in environmental studies for a few hours. The downside to this was i had alloted this time to doing aforementioned homework.
I'm trying to plan my spring schedule and for some reason 4 of the classes i really want are all at 1:20 MWF, which means 3 of these i will not take. But one of my back-up classes turns out to be taught by aforementioned expert, who also happens to be awesome, so i'm a little excited now for next semester though i'm barely surviving this one.
Ay, that was a lot of the same words saying very little, but i cannot think today, and am beginning to doubt i'm all that smart anyway so i'm not going to bother trying to impress people with my fabulous writing skills.
Ah well. Funny Quotes Overheard Today:

god talk and other inconsequentialsThis has been the most ludicrous week of my life.
And if you don't know me, trust that is indeed quite ludicrous. I'm trying to think of other ludicrous things that have happened to me, like the standard ludicrous times i've been kidnapped or crashed my bike in the mountains of Spain or the things that seem ludicrous to me, and me only, like the time i discovered Welsh has remarkably few palindromes, or the day Thomas, my cat, ate several cups of canned corn i had inadvertantly microwaved thrice, or the time my usually straight hair formed itself into 1954 beehive completely of its own accord.
But this is the most ludicrous of all.
I feel uncreative, as i can't think of any other way to say it.
I was talking with my BASE friend Rebecca in Science hall yesterday, basically verbalizing my last post dealing with Shame, and a random passerby looked me in the eye and said he was ashamed too. We all feel it.
Madison is a good place to be now, we are united by our shame.
But everyone is of the same opinion, and the liberal left is equally capable of stagnant catchwords as the christian right.
In midst of a conversation with my roommate on why i don't believe in god, Bush's environmental 'policies' came up, and she honestly (HONESTLY) didn't know he's been bad for the environment.
I, of course, know such things and tried to elucidate the situation, but the catchy misnomers the bushies use make all such attempts seem trivial and cynical. His Healthy Forest Act is a timber company giveaway, his Clean Air Act is a 40-year rollback of every little thing we've done, the man didn't accept global warming until a week ago, and still considers the Kyoto Treaty too harsh on America.
So i am personally shamed now, just to add to the mixture of depression. I know these things are fact, and i cannot convince an otherwise well-meaning individual of their importance.

Exhaustion, Shame, and bad things for BreakfastAs Missouri goes, so goes the nation.
The populace of Missouri should be trusted with nothing, as every one of them i've ever known thinks grits and racism is a good idea.
Goodbye Democracy, twas a good run. Somewhere between the Monroe Doctine and red-baiting the Farm Security Administration away i still thought you had a chance, but this week more than 50% of Americans showed themselves accepting of the lies, and i finally know you are gone. I'm not even sure if this is even an Oligarchy anymore, and i find that i'd be okay with even that.
Yesterday i honestly saw a high school friend, on his way to vote, who was STILL undecided. He said bush has one great thing going for him, that 'he has the right view on the gay marriage issue' to which i said, 'yup, if you're a bigot.' I admit
that's not the way to persuade those of the christian right to a more sensible view of the matter, but it's true. i am so sick of all this... and i'm sick of cheap kleenex.
I am sicker than i have been in years, and as i think i hallucinated Monday night, i want to believe all events since then are equally unreal. There is no way it could be this bad. Some people think it has to get bad before it can get better, but sometimes it can get so bad there's no better to go back to. Hello, anthropogenic climate change, i'm glad to see you outlasted your daddy democracy [and/or civilization itself].
This town is eerie. It is quiet as i have never heard it before.
And now... Comrades of our Canadian Exodus. I have these vague plans of moving to Canada, but part of me feels that this country of idiots needs all the semi-rational people it can get. On the other hand, i am exhausted of being ashamed.

Women: "Hi! Is Angela there?"
Ben, Micah, Rachel, John, & me: "No... this is an elevator."
Other than recieving a phone call on the elevator (ie,literally through the speakers of the elevator emergency phone) Halloween weekend was pretty normal for the life of Sarah Eddy. My costume was lame, but i saw a sniper firing into the crowd on State Street, none of us got tear-gassed (Ben and Rachel were sad about this). I also ate candy from a shady man, smoked peach tobacco from a hooka (thanks Micah!), looked at some metamorphic rocks, quoted Buffy, and argued against dualism.
Final Pirate/Ninja tally: 21/15
Pirates Win!
The riots were smaller this year, but the city's thinking of outlawing Halloween next year anyway. That should be interesting.
During the field trip Saturday we came up with what historians will ultimately refer to as the greatest genre-crossover of all time: Interpretive Geology.
You know, interpretive dancing with a point. It is pure genius. Every process we've examined so far can be shown with body/movement expression. I have several (very tired) Geologists on my side, now all we need is a good cheorographer. Brian & i decided our prof., Toni, will perform the special 'burrows' part, because in his accent 'burrows' is the most entertaining word ever.
Scene: John & i are awake, Mikah, Rachel, Ben still asleep
Me: "Do you want some breakfast?"
John: "No thanks...."
Me: "are you sure? anything else?"
Ben: (slowly wakes up) "I could go for a ciggarette"
Rachel & Mikah: "CIGGARETTE?!"
rocks, by any definition/clip art indescribable
