Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)

make it even easier

Friday we (Brenda+me) had a barbeque and i got my hair burned. Or rather, Brenda invited Kelee & Karen over, and where Kelee goes Jaryn & Crys follow, and where there are that many dramatic lesbians in one place, i invite my rational friends (who tend to be straight for some reason, but that's gotta be a sampling anomaly), so Zach was there too. And several dogs, but that's not part of the story, just the chaos.

After tasty tasty feta burgers and so forth, everybody was standing around outside/on our little tiny porch smoking. Jaryn & Karen were seated, i was standing next to Karen, a few feet from from the grill, which Crys & Kelee were playing with. Our porch is really tiny, about 3X8, and with four people was at capacity. i think Brenda was by our door, and Zach was on the lawn. In any case, Crys started squirting lighter fluid into the grill, which was all fine and dandy until she squirted a lot in it, creating a fireball. i instinctively backed away from it, and knocked over a candle, which ignited my hair. Karen slapped the fire out pretty quickly, but the left side was suddenly 5 inches shorter than the right side.

i cut it later that night, and all in all it looks okay (i'm getting a lot better at giving myself haircuts). It's shorter than it's been in several years, and feels really weird... but mysteriously only takes half as long to brush. What's up with that?

Now, i was really not that upset that my hair caught on fire. i mean, 6 inches is a lot to lose, but it'll grow back. It was an accident, and it's not like Crys meant for anyone to get burned or anything... but what she was doing was extremely stupid. The thing is that on Saturday Brenda & i went to a lake with them all again, and when the hair incident came up, Cyrs claimed it was all Kelee's fault for telling her to put more lighter fluid in. Which, even if true, is unimportant. Cyrs did it, and it could have easily been dangerous to either Karen or me. Her blaming somebody else pissed me off, and if she hadn't, the whole thing could just be a joke (honestly, how many of us in EC have wounded each other?). i'm terribly unimpressed with her anyway, she has the most remarkable last of curiosity i've ever encountered in another adult, and the only reason she has to hang out with us all the time is because she's jealous of Brenda's new friendship with Kelee and Jaryn... which is by itself annoyingly immature.

So that's the hair on fire incident, and its fallout thus far.

Damn, we need internet. i have 9 minutes left and haven't started either of my 2 internet projects for today nor told you lovely readers all about the actual fun of this weekend.

Because! We went to Seattle yesterday! Brenda's ex-boss Aimme and Aimee's friend Sara(h?) wanted to go to Pride, so we joined them. The parade was awesome, long and so forth, there was an impressive crowd. We went briefly to the Market, and walked around downtown Seattle, which i really like from my glimpse so far. Clara picked me up, and we went to an absolutely adorable tea place, and drove me around town a little. Seeing Clara was great, she's doing awesome and i hadn't seen her in 2 years. i'll probably go visit her again, or maybe she'll even come up here for a weekend sometime. i'm terribly excited about it.

gah, 5 minutes. Honestly.

Wow, we need our own internet. i have 9 minutes to post, so no proofreading... but nothing terribly exciting has happened today, so i supposse that's okay. i worked at San Juan, and discovered if i go as fast as possible it takes 33 minutes from my door to their door... but in the process i nearly kill myself. So i'll assume a 45 minute ride for that one.

After work i stopped at Boulevard park, had myself a mocha on the shore, and read. Pretty much the perfect day, no?

Brenda & i went out again last night, to a Betty show at Rumours, which is apparently an institution 'round here. It was okay, pretty much amounted to an elderly drag queen singing 'hits' (as Brenda said, she sure ain't no DeLovely!). It seems like the dramadramadrama with Brenda's psuedo-girlfriend & co is resolved for the minute, and i hope for Brenda it remains resolved (-ish).

i work again tomorrow, and have bbq to go to (with Zach & bio peoples), and Brenda doesn't work this weekend, so we'll probably get up to some crazy mischief. Or go see me a frickin' volcano!

in the car the other day:
Me: You know, we have to go see Mt. Baker soon--there's no excuse for me to be here too long and not see a volcano!
Brenda: *look of fear* MOUNT BAKER IS A VOLCANO? OH NO!

So neither the sailing lessons or collecting invertebrates happened yet this week, but i have gone on several bike rides instead & read all of Red Mars in three days... which is almost insane, but since i did that i've decided i should read the entire trilogy in a week. Just because. And they'll both happen next week instead, so it's all good.

It's only 6 in the evening, and i'm frickin' tired. i biked to campus today, and Zach gave me a tour (another place for free internet?), and we hiked up a giant hill behind Western. It's awesome doing stuff like that with a biology person, he actually knows the names of plants and so forth.

Man, we need our own internet. i have 1 minute left here.

upon the intricacies of soap

So! This week i'm going to BOTH take sailing lessons & collect invertebrates! i hung out with Zach Thursday, and according to him (biology grad student that he is) marine invertebrates of the Pacific Northwest are the best anywhere, and i absolutely must see some clams and oysters and nudibranches (sp??) and so forth. i couldn't agree more. At work, i get a discount on sailing lessons, to the point that it's actually affordable. The prices without the discount (and on a weekend and with an ASA testing) run around $300, which would never happen, but i really don't need the ASA stamp of approval right now, nor do i have that much to do on say, Tuesdays. So, AWESOME.

i've hung out with Rebekah O a few times this week, which is absolutely wonderful. We went on the most adorable biking tour of Bellingham (on Tuesday? i think?), which ended with me buying more books (of course) and with plans to go out for ice cream again soon. We watched this old German movie, Three Penney Opera, last night, which pretty much confused us both but is a standard of early musicals. Apparently. There was this one line... in a completely random song about the glories of being a soldier... sometimes it rains some/but then we maim some... that i irritably can't get out of my head. i mean, really? (i'll go wherever you go even if there's no receipt paper) Weird stuff, yo. i think we both decided that 1/3 of the movie wasn't necessary, and that the songs were random at best... but there is an interesting plot for awhile that makes it worth it.

The drama's still going on with the girls, and we're all going out again tonight. i've avoided going out most of this week, because that's pretty much all we did last week, but tonight should be good. My favorite thing thus far, from all the drama is when last week Kelee's 2 ex-es dropped in on her and she didn't want to talk to them, she decided to go shopping with them. At an adult store.

And who doesn't want Teenage Polish Chickens? Really?

earlier in the day

i got a job! Cleaning Boats! My boss seems really awesome, it's terribly part time, i start Friday, and best of all i didn't have to say a word about why kinko's let me go (if that's how one phrases it?). Operation: Make Friends Who Will Take Me Sailing: phase one complete!

Brenda (roommate) & Kashi (her dog) & Kelee (her girlfriend?) went to Boulevard Park yesterday, which is a long, thin park on Bellingham Bay with a coffee shop in the middle of it. And a boardwalk, but nothing like the atrocious boardwalks in Jersey. More pretty and not made for putting pinball machines as close to the water as possible to disrupt every bit of oceanic enjoyment one could have. In any case, it was super pretty and pretty much my new favorite place ever... but at this rate i'll have a new favorite place ever by 9:37 tonight.

And omg i'm tired. i haven't biked in years, this town is hilly, and i got terribly, terribly lost looking for a building to drop off an application at. After i passed that one building in downtown i recognize the third frickin' time i realized that maybe my infallible sense of direction only works when i'm paying attention the angles i'm turning (and not concentrating on which direction will not waste any kinetic energy i may have gathered). Gonna go home & read-why? bc Kim Stanley Robinson in my favorite, ever (other than OSC and OB and... whatever).

And who doesn't like a good slime-mold beetle (named after Arbusto)?

Montana: It Has Meanders.

So, the move.

It went well: RGE drove me to the station, we were early and the check-em-in lady was rude, but in the end my bike arrived with me in Everett. In between, i read 2.5 novels (Bellwether by Connie Willis, Sphere, and half of In Our Time by Hemingway), and didn't really make any Crazy Public Transportation friends, which was sad. i did, however, get seated at dinner with the first-class passengers who happened to have won a bottle of wine at their wine & cheese tasting and got free wine out of the deal (wine & cheese tastings on a frickin' train? rich people have got to be kidding...!). Somehow i got to Everett 2 hours earlier than expected, and Brenda was still asleep up here in Bellingham, but her tardiness let me meet plenty of Crazy Public Transportation Friends at the Everett Station. And then she found me, and we pulled some mad girl scouts skills out of some forgotten corners of our brains to make the damn bike fit in her cute little car (i should have, maybe, checked to make sure a bike would fit in the first place?).

My first day in Bham i got coffee like 4 times, which is pretty much heaven on earth. Everything is greener here, and more drizzly, but honestly that's okay. (NOTE: i'm pretty sure every person i've met has warned me about the winters, but seriously: i'm from WISCONSIN. LAND OF SNOW DRIFTS TALLER THAN ME. i think i can deal.) We went shopping, as Brenda needed stuffs, and there are a surprisingly vast array of second hand shops, which is nice. Our apartment is in Fairhaven, or rather very close to what i'd consider a cute/uppercrustie downtown Fairhaven, but apparently nobody refers to it as that. i can walk to 2 bookstores (dangerous), at least 7 coffee shops (tasty), this mini-public library (convenient), and the bay (FRICKIN' AWESOME). The apartment was also terribly stark (white!) when i arrived, so i've spent some quality time unpacking the posters i brought and brightening the place up a bit.

Other than that, i've been reading, looking for jobs, and going to Rumours (local gay bar, bigger/more expensive than Scooters/more drama-filled) with Brenda quite often. More later when i: A) have an awesome job or B)have awesome explorations to report.

and this conversation really did happen last night:
Brenda: I don't know what kind of clam it is... small and edible?
Kelee: It's probably a M-A-N-E-L-L-A clam. They're pretty common.
Brenda: Why'd you spell that?
Kelee: I can't pronounce M-A-N-E-L-L-A. Or any word like that.
Me: What's the capital of the Philippines?
