Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)
six years running & messier every time!Elyse: "Let the Dirty Viking speak."
Eric: "I totally burnt my eyebrow off."
Kirk: "Yes. But back to The Theory."
All: "It's like the future! But a theory!"
Kirk: "You are just making fun of me."
Later:
Mike: "Get off the computre. You're addicting. Since when does blogger allow aim?"
Oye, this has officially been my first drunk post. Good grammar so far, ay?
And it's a marvellous party. So many fights, so may promises.
Bekah: "Elyse! No More Demon Flavored Berry Juice!"
"Uh, miss, may I have a pad of paper? It's for military business. Ah, Africa. January." --Max, at Pier One Imports [funny because he was serious]--
"Oh, Sarah, you MISSED my leper phase!" --Bryan--
It is good to be home.
Back in EC, didn't call anyone ('cept for Tony). RGE drove me to pick him up, and then to Bryan's, Donna & Rick came home, CJ was already here, Rachel came over because that's what she does. Went to Perkins, did
boring relaxing sit-around-the-house thing, and everybody fell asleep (and they THOUGHT it was i who was fading... um, napped all day in the car, yo).
God it is good to be home.
For those of you who haven't figured it out yet, everytime i come home i call one person & wait to see who else we run into/who calls me. i mean, we also ran into Ben (at the Ronald Raygun concert at Racy's) and Karen (at Perkins), and most of ya'll know my relative timings/habits anyway, so it's not like i'm difficult to find.
The drive back from Arkansas was pretty boring (almost finished a second novel this break). We could have stayed longer, at least until late afternoon, especially since we hung out in Madison today for almost 4 hours after getting up (and it's not like i don't spend enough time there). We stopped for an appetizer visit to St. Louis (sorry Marcus & Dave that my notice was too short/couldn't visit ya'll at work) & Myke showed me around a bit. Rachel was sad to leave Holly early, and is now planning on going back over spring break or some such. Since i haven't mentioned it already, it was great finally meeting Holly. i hope RGE does make it back in the near future. [Finaces & timing allowing, god LIFE IS PAIN (when your girl is states away).]
i, however, am very excited for this week. it's probably the longest in at least a year that i have so little to do & so much time to do it in. Oye, i would go on except for the fact that most of my attentive audience has already heard this vocally.
And will certainly hear it again.
Someone is calling Donna. It's now 2:28 a.m. and fully 2/3 of her friends are already asleep in this house. Okay, maybe i am exaggerating.
i haven't heard what i've missed other than Bryan's glorious leper phase (yes Bryan, i'm using your name often so you know i'm talking about you, Bryan; Bryan my love and dearest German/Russian thing, *a hush!* Bryan! (and yes, Bryan, i will ACTUALLY write you a poem on the "Bryan is Most Glorious" theme! Perhaps more than one poem!)) i don't like not living in EC. i am laaaaaaaaaaaame. i am very tempted to move back here.
i am very hungry AGAIN. How is this possible? Why is everyone ASLEEP? Someone wake up & FEED me!
Ah!
Hi Donna, thanks for *letting* me use your computre whilst you nap!
It is good to be home.
Ah, also went to Acoustic with the mumsy, and normal family 'bitterness' ensued. i shall, therefore, leave you with the quote of the day (which i personally think is good enough for the big book of wisdom, but only time will tell):
"My favorite daughter... hm, it's either Penny's dead dog or Rachel R." --my mom to her two actual daughters--
"How can you know the car's empty unless you empty the car?" --my father is also a sage & a prophet, no?--

So, as we've already established, i have a brand new computre. i've already (obviously, i guess) figured out how to connect to the internet & play with photos (the above is my background for now, except not tiny). A few hours into this, however, i realized (not for the first time) how freaking little i know about computres. Uh. So, you people with skills, either plan a tutorial for me or... at least answer me this:
1. what's a good music downloading program?
2. how do i install it without being eaten by popups?
3. and stuff. jesus, other than internet-research, i don't know what i'm doing. at all. ugggggggg.
4. what programs (especially for photo editing) should i use?
it occurs to me that this is really, really awkward timing on the buying of a new laptop. i'm not going to grad school next year, and by the time i do i'll probably want something that can handle modeling programs (or something, the point is that i have no way of knowing that now). i do have the option of selling it back to my dad, because it is nicer than his desktop at home (heh, not Jasonified, if you know what i mean... none of you do, i am only here to humour myself). it's basically a glorified surf the internet & save photos toy given my knowledge of computres, and something about that doesn't feel right... teach me better, i'm not worthy.
also, i went to the most pictaresque town in Arkansas today (Eureka Springs).
it
was
crazy
and i was very hungary the whole time we were there.
so then i ate a sandwich
and so we drove out of winter...About an hour out of Madison, that is; and then the snow stopped. Reporting from Arkansas, i am, and the more attentive of you ought to be asking: "How
is that possible? Did Sarah, after begging for it for years, finally get her very own computre for Xmas?" and i would, of course, reply, "Why Yes! My father did, indeed, grant the christmas wish i (okay, second or third) most desired!"
i also, with RGE, got battling Sky Dancers. Well, we make them battle at any rate.
So far in Arkansas, i have visited a drainage ditch, several state parks, several briar patches, a few creeks, a hospital, a bookstore, tacky Mexican & Chinese diners, and the Kewpie Hall of Fame. Jessie almost jumped off a cliff, but that's because she's stupid not suicidal. Eddy the Youngest is most enjoying her time with you-know-who, who is quite adorable & such, but i pretty much have been geocaching. Not that there's anything wrong with geocaching, but honestly... what sort of person goes to Branson, MO, on Christmas eve? Or, shall i forever shame myself for reiterating it, the Kewpie Museum?*
i shall leave all you fine people with some random tidbits of eddy-fam "wisdom:"
1. "Don't let your upside-down, rainbow'd color'd triangle wave, sista. No, I have no idea what that means either." --Dad to RGE--
2. "i am NOT throwing rocks at you, i'm throwing LOVE!" --me to RGE--
3. "How can you possibly visit Arkansas and
not climb a hill?!" --Dad to RGE--
4. *"W-T-the-fuck!" --RGE's theme o'day--
5. "That rock sank in the water and bounced on the land! But... not in that order." --me on my inability to skip stones (rge, however, is pretty good at it)--
and since we're Ozark-ing it up, a saying i got to use quite oft today:
"This road has more twists an' turns than a bushel full of snakes!"[said with appropriate drawl!! always!]
"There is no way I could love
a hot dog in Latin."
Happy Solstice!
No really, happy solstice!
Are you happy yet?? Really?
And it's officially winter, as of 12:35 this afternoon.
And in news-ish things, because i know i won't post anything of substance at least until January, tomorroww is my final final and Friday RGE, dad & i head to Arkansas. We should be back in EC around the 29th. Everybody betta be planning on being at the 515.33 German-like street on New Year's, because i'm planning on ya'll being there (and ~four madisonites are coming too(!!)).
This was such a great day, despite the lack of light and the plumber's (almost JERSEY-like:
irate!!) ruckus this morning. We sprinted to another house, took an emergency nap, ate perogies, and made fun of my hobo gloves. Wait, i defended my hobo gloves... but you know. Delicious cookie dough, a holiday party. Long hours, doing my laundry; never leave home: they will come to me; and if not: that's okay too.
[
mmmmmmm; slipping on dreams ne'er had; "feed the fire & fan the flame," 'ov course you can show your face again!', hours at the Corner Store & a cold walk by a sports bar ("The right sport??" "Surprisingly, yes.")]
at least one a day:
"That conversation turned from shoes to punching people waaaaaay too fast."

Kirk & Adam

Gus & Noah

i couldn't, in good faith, even tell you what they were looking at
"'Pointing a flame thrower at a broom' does not
mean the same thing as 'it started on fire; therefore I couldn't clean the bathroom!'"mmmmmm, finals!
finality!
not really, but so close, yeah.
So i totally got kicked out of the library today by my boss. Whoops! (how did such a somber person as myself end up talking about irish car bombs 20 minutes before the hydro final? Honestly. i blame Jon & Dave... because they were there and because it actually was their fault.)
versions of european history:
"The Welsh are still angry with the English over this?"
"Yes. They have very long memories."
"---Wait. Sarah. Your grandfather has Alzheimer's."
formal wear but no reportage of the weird things speakers say/a photo or two with Buckyi spent most of yesterday at UW's winter graduation. Jon, Sabrina, and a handful of other geology people graduated, among a few others i recognized/congratulated/don't actually know that well. The dean of our department knows me, came up to us (being our table of mostly his family) with her Happy Bucky With A Rock Hammer flag; that's her job i guess, but i tell you because only i would know that ("What's next?" "Ahhhh..."). The ceremony was in the Kohl center, i.e. where basketball games are, & i've never been in there before. Sat with his family & my roommate through two long speeches, several applaudable introductions ("Did you know...? We're ahead of Harvard!" *clapstuff!*), and the L&S, engineering, and business school lists of names (one Mr. Cheeseblade graduated, RR, so i told everyone about Takwonda) and faces parading past us (second row seats for the cheering section!). Then we did the mandatory photo-op, (not-mandatory in most circles) video-game break, and large family-dinner-thing. All around beautiful (in addition to several hyper-happy sandwich-mongering cousins, there are the two most adorable grandmothers ever, one who drinks coffee and one who doesn't; oy!; and OMG RGE, so there were papermenus for the kids, and they all had crayons, and were drawing veggitales and the like, and i drew the ninja carrot to honour your legacy and stuff, and one of them drew a SAMURAI TOMATOE and i think... i think... you must uphold your honour!).
i'm thinking this post could get real long iffen i continued with some other trains of thought... but i don't really need to.
And so it's Monday morning, and i'm back in the Library.
This coffee is so very delicious. My gosh!
Edit: i got some photos, here's one:
"So, not only were you confused about who was meeting the mother, you were confused about which mum we meant?"
a few photos i forgot i had saved online:
in case you missed it, Bry-bry has a lot of time on his hands.

and i don't know what's up with his gorgeous hair here....

i'm 90% sure i took this photo. RR==hottstuff!

and so... the plumbing broke!
(Mike, Steve, Jon, & Mikah's excuse to throw a party!)
"hey my my my my rock-star, saw your feet hit the ground, said all i want to do is..."--IG--
Sleeping in for the first time in a month: yes. Maybe i even slept too much, there's maybe half an hour of daylight left. Finals, studying (sort of), still freaking out about graduations, Arkansas & being an ailurophile in student housing.
Instead of going out last night (as most Thursdays i am wont to do), i finished fully 2/3 of a collage. i am rather proud of myself, and the giftee better appreciate it & not lose it in Washington state this time (5 am storms over Montana? blast!). i'd photocopy the damn thing if it weren't poster-sized (and if i had any cash). i neeeeeeeeeeed more gluesticks. and a photocopier, a printer, and a nice new camera (and
whatnot!).
My age is defined by my hair-do (apparently). Today i am five years old. A begger on state street called me the cutest goldilocks all afternoon. This is notable only because i was not blond or carrying any dimes.
The funny story of the week, in summary, occurred Wendesday morning when my (really loud MM-themed) phone rang at 8:00 am, and in my sleep i asked, "
Why are you calling me?" (which i subsequently forgot about, and was reminded of at late night Great Dane dinner.)
Heh, "geology goggles."
i don't know why i even try to type sentences anymore.
Context be damned.
love, sarah
p.s. RGE: Of course Life is Pain. Do you have any silly putty?
"You could get two bibles and some string--"
"No, i don't think this is a good idea. But. Thanks...?"

"

"Yeah, the spatial relationship: close. Wasn't gonna ask, though."
optical illusions of wire on snow
published on cephalopods...There is nothing like listening to Chavela Vargas, typing in the dark, and talking about contiguous backyards to make me feel nostalgic. Why i should bother with that i don't know, only a week left of this semestre, break will be great & next semestre even better.
Big things afloat. A graduation this Sunday==meeting o' the parents. Is there some sort of protocal one must follow with these things? On the flip side, Dad, too, is excited to meet (certain) people here in Madison ("He likes Mexican? I approve.") but the-much-more important friend approval=already gained. Not that i brought that up at the time, i know the limits (and i'd guess Nik's "How much can I puke on him?... really?!" would have pushed that a bit).
Donna, Rachel, Rachel, when are you home so i might call you? Seriously, girls. The pizza'll be okay. And also, Bryan... um. Call me back already, busy boy. Do i need to insult Germany AND Russia to get your attention? Tennis players are chumps.
The library exploded today into activity. Which reminds me of that last hydro homework i'm not doing right now... you guessed it, geochem. Chemistry=much more fun in the hypothetical.
i really hope my neighbors are having a dance party. Otherwise... what is going on?
Oh, other big things afloat. i guess we(me+roomie+saidneighbors) are having a holiday party next Wendesday (because two of them are done with finals that day). So if anyone actually in Madison reads this, you're probably invited.
Honestly...
who salsas on a Tuesday?
yard o' beef the vegetarian laughs at; lever staircase, melodic tommorroww, cats in the dungeon; ay! zandunga!
synchronicity and five things you ne'er thoughtTony got paid $8 to insult people in print!if that's not the best thing ever, i can't fathom what is...
except maybe that i've finally found
a way to find that body (yes, with SCIENCE!) Clandestine burials! [When did my sense of humour become so most refined (as in "whittled")?]
i spent 5 hours on that GPR final project yesterday, and GOT SO MUCH DONE this weekend i'm not sure if i'm in the same plane(/plain?). i got fully 2/3 of my hydro done too, i know such sweet people who don't get testy with my inability to operate a calculator. (It has, in fact, become a running joke:
Me: "...ah? ...17?!"
Everyone: "That... just... can't be." (repeatadabsurdum)
but the even better running joke of the weekend was Dave saying something ludicrous ("Come home and make me some toast!" or "I shall hide my children from you!") and me making faces at Jon. Whoops!)
Saturday night, en route to movie time, i ran into Lauren and two of her (young, high school sophomore) friends; whilst standing there relating
our her drunken stories of yet another glorious concert, three of her roommates joined us (making me LATE). i felt old. And then, Sunday, leaving engineering, there was a full-on 'run into everyone you know in Madison but never see or remember even go here' party, followed by a 'every senior in Geology has to do computre work RIGHT NOW' party, and the all AGU people had very different reports (one brought me back a semestre at sea brochure, how much more loved could i be? shit.) and so on. This is all in contrast to: earlier this semestre, probably around week 3, when i didn't leave the house all weekend (in order to sleep) and my roommate said something along the lines of "When are you going to return to your normal social self?" to which i thought, "the hell?" because socializing is not what i do in Madison. But randomness on weekends like this (apparently) betray(s) that idea of myself.
i'm loving my life, except maybe for the lack of a concensus on what "facetious" means (isn't that
vierd?).
(
how can it beeeeeeethathard?) i would trudge into some retouched form of BTP if it weren't for being fully 3 birthdays past it, and being too far from those editors.
This is my last normal Monday (lunch, hydro, library, fretting, fun).
Countdown to Arkansas: 11 (RGE HAVE YOU MADE PLANS YET? FOR REALS).
i miss EC (no one is surprised).
this has been one of the most discursive entries yet (even i can't figure out why all these ideas are together).
"This is for the people of the sun...."--Spanish Class today--
"I don't care who he is, Sarah Eddy...."--at the G.I. a few weeks ago--
"And then Jesus said to Mary...."--behind Psychology smoke break--
"He is, dare I say, debonair."--surprise lunchtime meeting--
"Some sort of record...."/gigglegoodmorning
would i be the typeto take the bait
and then give it back?
My mom's car died; therefore i shouldn't get a piercing.
This is (clearly) her logic, not myne.
Am i (now really, truly) a bad person to have different categories for these things?
but in retrospect, i see it's only the insane who have conquered dualism

then in the end you are absolved
and the problem
of heaven

Watching (half) the movie Constantine got this song in my head (i could never take any religion that considers suicide a mortal sin seriously). Yesterday we also saw Narnia** (it was a triple gay date, except my dressing up as a man got vetoed) and went to a "formal" party. i thus have very unusual (read: fancy high-heeled) shoes and crimpy/wild hair for a day in the Geology library (due to poor planning of the latter half of this).
Snowing/cold out, hypothetical airplane rides & ski trips (when everybody (Angie, Dave, Jon, whoever else they know that enjoys winter sports) will go skiing, i'll attempt to learn but get minorly injured on the second day & spend the rest of the trip sipping hot chocolate & collaging), random stories i'd almost forgotten [
"baby got in a car accident!"], displaced by automobiles, laughing at exactly the wrong time, learning a faster way to purl.
When i went to Georgia
Fred tried to steal my cereal (no, that is NOT what he's going to jail for). Jill shared muffins with him, and he gave us orange juice.
Oh, those were the days, were they not?
This has definitely been the semestre that never happened.
i think i just feel that way because i haven't
done much (if
anything). It's like everything that has happened lately was set up long ago; this is the penultimate episode of some really good series you weren't sure you'd like and then got hooked on. i feel that everybody's acting out the parts written for them before all the actors were even chosen. Between geology, uu-stuff, trips, friend's situations back home, conversations with my mother & about my cat, everything is almost exactly how i would picture it. Well, i guess that's a lie since i didn't anticipate the relationship-thing (which is honestly HUGE/wonderful/manyothercommentshere), but even that flows nicely into my concept of what being 22/in college in Madison (sch/)would be. On some levels at least.
Saying "everybody's acting out the parts written for them" is really (too) harsh; i'm sorry. this is specifally aimed at some people and definitely not at others; don't be offended because if you read this far the statistical chances of you being one of those people is small... and it's not really a bad thing, just complacent. And sometimes i think i shouldn't comment on these things... okay, i'm crashing this train of thought now before i super offend myself again.
i don't like the phrase "end up" as in "one ends up" in a certain situation/place/as a certain type of person. There is no such thing [as "ending up" somewhere].
i've also decided to define "maturity" as the ability to wait. i shall still never pronounce it in the southeastern wisconsin (like my mom) way, however.
Donna, whatever happened to our hermitage? Can we still do that?

However, Tony & i are getting pierced again, so all may donate to the fund if so inclined. Find Tony for details on this, but between two wrist piercings & 1 eyebrow (right?) i think we're talking $60.
Jen will love us!
...and i only knew the half of it.Edit: So some of the Madison people are now inclined to visit EC for the New Year's party. Bekah, on the attendence factor alone, is this alright? Will we FIT in your house?
the only room full of lightis the library.
Almost_trying's reccommendation of the day. She's entirely right.
i'm still going crazy over the "hey, Arkansas!" for Xmas thing, and the fact that winter break is only two weeks long after that. i may (have to) work in the library for part of it, but i want to be in EC for as long as possible, i wanted to go to St. Paul, i need to go to Stanley/the farm for a few days (i haven't done that since LAST WINTER BREAK HOLY WHERE AM I?!), and now i want to go to Two Rivers, Wisconsin. None of you know where that is, that's okay. And there's birthdays and art museums too. All of which will equal not finding a job during "break" as i had planned.
A building across the street from Geology was knocked down last Thursday. i spent all of that day working on a spanish essay, and walking back and forth for food. Odd to see a place i almost lived at (there were apartments above Milan's) go.
Oh my god i just realized i have to buy a plane ticket to Hawai'i.
And read millions of papers on carbon cycling.
Yesterday i worked in the library (boring part except for the 400 gemology students, yes) and "worked" and went for coffee with the girls o' geology. Wonderful; then rare collage/reading time and a nap. Waking up at 10:00 to play cards
is weird. As if my internal clock wasn't already DEAD. i can now (hypothetically) play Sheep's Head, and it turns out the phrase "Shoot the Moon" is a card game reference. Who knew?
People: i want responses. Other than Ian's/My New Year's Party at Nik/Bekah's, is anything essential happening in January? Make demands on my time NOW. i will bow to your wishes, luvres.
That is, after Arkansas.
i need to sneeze so much and my nose just won't. Life=pain.

It's all about context.
Friday 9:45: Heidi, Ian & Adam show up*.
9:55: Bekah, Nik & Kirk show up.
ongoing: Jon's roommates, upstairs neighbors, Axis & Allies, Mousetrap, bad hostessing at 5:00 a.m.
Saturday 4:25: washed some dishes; Bekah on WoW
4:56: start of 10 minute nap
5:06: All return from pool games at the Great Dane; planning in works
this format ain't gonna cut it, so now i'm done with the timing things. As my roommate said this weekend exists outside of the normal life in Madison/school context. The EC convoy meeting many of the various Madison peoples priceless, long smoking ambles, confusing street meetings, cell phone answers and not-answers, several uu cats in my living room, microwaving in the attic, live bluegrass in my bedroom, two masters with G&T battling without knives, the deliciousness of blueberry bagels and the loudness of Ian & Sam 10 years ago, formal goodbyes when one's still around, stalkers in snowbanks, way too much gamer-talk, and boys watching knitting.
In case you missed it in that list, WE HAD
LIVE VIOLIN AND GUITAR IN MY BEDROOM AND DANCED TO IT IN MY LIVING ROOM. Very, very special thanks to Noah & Gus. And especially to Noah for the party idea in the first place.
In sum, "The Whiskey Don't Cut it No More" party was more than a success. Less uu folk showed than i expected (another excuse to throw a party!), but the apartment was full & everybody seemed to have a good time (photos to follow, no worries). i really enjoy that everytime Maddie (who is a
freshman) comes over, it's to drink with a completely different group of people. i'm wondering how long we can keep this up.
And the house isn't even that messy. God i want lasagna.
"It's like smoking Christmas."--Ian--
"It was only... making out with an illegal substance. Not full-on. Right? I felt so bad! Was it on tape?"--Heidi--

*Always about context ("Hello my darling! Hello my dreamtime! Hello my ragtime girl!").
it was the sort of thing
one only thinks
when staring at the sunHow people react to failure, sudden saturnine news, disappointment or disatrous denouement is most telling--of their character at large, self-perception, expectations of the world/the people they know. i think that i used to be good with these things; somewhere along the way i lost something. Looking back, i can't remember a point in my life when i felt truly relaxed or prepared for the next situation that would cross me; but it's different now. i don't even write at length like i used to (here or in ink). The sentences have become shorter and less fulfilling.
This whole week has been an ongoing comedy of errors in all things academic. i have to redo a geophysics lab (one that already was a static headache in round one), i misread my spanish essay assignment (and thus wrote it twice... sort of), i slept through spanish wendesday (and had a quiz on that material today), and finally, error pop-ups ate my hydro lab. Or something.
At about 5:30 yesterday i was staring at that terrible program, and i said very, very loudly to myself, "
PEOPLE WILL STILL LOVE ME EVEN IF I CAN'T HANDLE HYDRO!" [edit: right?]
My mom called me and was even less helpful than usual; my dad called me and was uncharacteristically helpful (but still not actually helpful, the world's not THAT crazy); and i told myself over and over that
it's just school. It is just school and a few bad grades aren't that big of a deal. So what if i, like, want to go to grad school and wanted to do well and, in some cases, do actually care about the material? i had some supper, some chocolate, a cigarrette, and tried to calm down. Plus, i'm always a moody brat in the winter (i hate the slush 'cause i can't walk fast, i hate the cold 'cause i can't walk slow): but i think, hey maybe this year i can handle it; this time i know what to expect.
And then, sometimes, real things happen.
But it'll be okay; Jon didn't work yesterday (he usually does on thursdays) and (after i finished redrafting that great essay) we went to the Essen House and persued alcoholism with Ans, Angie, the members of the (as of tonight defunct) band Closed Mondays, this girl Leah who i know & she knows me but neither of us know why or how, and some miscellenous friends and relatives of Ans. We sat around and we threw popcorn and we danced and i was back in my routine
except it was better and i knew that enough of me really does care about these people and i had something to look forward to.
But i had nothing to say.
So i thought, even when there's nothing to say, there's always more to drink.
i don't think that's that helpful. i'll work on it. Official nap plan==action!
the setup was perfect
but life ain't a movie
retired tagline: "Lunchtime Identity Crisis"
new tagline: "Accountable Infinity, However"
based on a conversation betwixt RGE, Bryan and myself that went something like this:
en route to Perkins:B: I want a quesadilla!
RGE: Have you ever seen an armadillo?
M: They jump when frightened... poor self-defense.
RGE: And
don't explode into glitter?
B: *something about implosions*
R: Wait, is the universe imploding or exploding?
B: *long explanation of science that he doesn't actually understand*
M: Um, no.
RGE: *confused*
B: *furthur explanation of science that he doesn't actually understand*
M: Do you
know numbers?
all: *long pause*
B:
A countable infinity, however!
