Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)
30 mar 2004

My great-uncle Don died, and the funeral was today. I didn't go to it. I didn't even know my uncle Don. The only reason this pertains to me in any way is that my mom and John stopped to visit me on the way back from the funeral (and now there are only two brothers left to die!). I was happy to see my mom, and her progress on my dress. Sometimes i miss my mom, but within a few minutes of seeing her i realize why i used to get so sick of her; but then again she is much more 'balanced' or whatever that elusive trait of normalicy is.

I'm officially a juniur once again. Today at the undergrad geoclub I was nominated to be the Mentor-Liasion contact for next year: the only post in the club demanding any real work.

For when thy labour doon al ys,
And hast mad alle thy rekenynges,
In stede of reste and newe thynes,
Thou goost hom to thy hous anoon,
And, also domb as any stoon,
Thou sittest at another book
Tyl fully daswed ys thy look.

For when all your labour is done,
And you have finished all accounts,
Instead of rest and entertainment
You go home to your house anon,
And, just as dumb as any stone,
You sit before another book,
Till fully dazed is your look!

the Guatemalan just called me again....

Sharks can not possibly get me... for a few reasons: usually, i reside in Wisconsin; and:

Once, while i was in the Bahamas, we took a long walk to the highest point of Lee Stocking Island to look down on the ray breeding grounds. While rays breed, sharks pray, so we were very excited to see the rays&sharks from a safe distance. However, it was cloudy so the rays&sharks just looked like a gray blob 123 feet below us in the water. So we walked back down, and emerged at a beautiful Loyalist beach. Though you may think of the Bahamas as an ultimate paradise, i will tell you this is not true: it's a desert, and the plants that survive here are all sharp. They'll cut through anything, especially your skin, especially when you loose the trail (this is why we brought Michael along, to do the hard core bushwacking in pink flip-flops).

You may think that because i was on a trip to the Bahamas in January, we were doing lots of swimming and snorkeling. This is not the case, as UW-Milwaukee and the W.A.T.E.R. institute had had some issues with insurance, making it effectively illegal for us students to get wet. Try telling the storms that, ey. So Micheal, Yabba-Dabba-Drew, Laura, Kelly and i had been on a boat sailing from Florida to the Bahamas for over a week, and were legally 'dry' at every point. To keep the lawyers and administrative folk happy, see.

Now, as we walked along Loyalist beach, somehow Michael's frisbee got in the water.

We had to get it back.

Later, drying ourselves off and trying to look presentable for the boatshuttle back to the schooner, Yabba-Dabba-Drew realized his knees were still bleeding. Upon closer inspection, we all had open cuts and sores on our legs.

And we were literally right around an outcrop from the ray breeding ground.

Since we all survived, sharks must not want me too badly.

The concert was okay. Sunspot, the band from Madison, was awesome. Generally too loud, but i do have such tender ears.

It seems that every time i am home there are different people living here. Apparently John (Kim's eldest) lived here most of January & February, but i missed it. James (and Larken) are asleep, so i know it is late. Even Thomas is giving me the lets-go-to bed dance, and he's supposed to be nocturnal.

Thomas is many things cats aren't supposed to be, such as a lover of eating twice-cooked-corn-mixed-with-cappucino but not gravy.

You will go to your grave not knowing how i know that.

I love that my feet hold a shoe's shape longer than the shoe itself lasts. Jumping around today at the concert opened up a scab i have from a pair of shoes i no longer own, and as i was considering this circumstance i realized i have two scabs/bumps from my green Docs that i haven't worn in at least a year. I think my sister stole them. Hm. Or did i give them away?

Sunspot, like i said, is an awesome band. They're playing the Orpheum in Madison on May 1st, and i invite any and all of you to come to the show (and stay with me, if you need to). Because the Orpheum is an awesome venue, and if you're from a place such as Wisconsin you must become aware that a few worthwhile locals exista. I can't think of any others, but they must be extant.

they must...
hm.
good WI locals:

1. Racy's
2. the Orpheum
3. the Safehouse
4. my old treehouse
5. the Rindo basement
6. the "thanks for visiting Wisconsin, please come again!" signs, but only when you know you won't be seeing them for a long, long time.
7. Donna's bedroom
8. top of a harvestor
9.
10.

Once i got past 3, i really wanted that to be a top 10 list, but i can't think of any others. Jesus, let's all move.

Far away.

However, i really like Eau Claire. What i like about it isn't the city itself, because the city itself is shitty. Car culture, to the marrow.
What i like is that i see people i know when i go places, like Racy's, Acoustic, Wolf concerts, et cetera. It's bizarre that these places should be 'familar,' as every town about our size has a Baker's Square, but when i'm at our particular Baker's Square, i (in real life) see people i know (such as Allison, Bethany, or my mom) and see (in memory) many more.

Thomas gave up his let-us-nap dance and abondoned me. pooooooooor, depressed kitty. (heh, pour)

I also saw Mary & Allison at Acoustic today, twas wonderful. They my homeys. Allison and i are going to make a kick-ass movie about a superstar, played by Mary. Mary already agreed to be the superstar, but she doesn't know what we have in mind for the script.

from the mynds of Allison and Sarah... could there be anything more sadistic?

Don't worry too much, honey.

Goodnight.

I haven't seen The Passion yet, but i have heard too much about it already and now have no desire to see it. Besides, Tasha ruined the ending for me... something about Jesus, Our Lord and Saviour, dying.

I was talking to a very Christian friend of myne, and my sister said something suggesting she doesn't like Christian music. As Glen pointed out, that is silly as there are many different types of Christian music, rap, country, rap, et cetera. True enough. But what i don't like, and what i'll guess my sister doesn't like, is the agenda, of Christian music. And this upsets Christians very much. He said that our not appreciating Christian music, and thus his faith, was persecution.

UWEC once upon a time had a Wicca group. They used to have meetings weekly, or biweekly, or something--regularly, anyway. Then someone started sending them threats, and they were forced to move their meetings every time. Even as the group diwindled, they still recieved threats, until they just gave up. It was too stressful on the Witches to meet together. They were being persecuted. Read it again: someone in Eau Claire was actively seeking to make the Witches afraid. They were being persecuted.

The weird thing about the UWEC Wicca thing is that when i first heard the story i wasn't surprised at all. This is how we expect Witches, or others in minority religions, to be treated. We're used to it, so we don't try as hard to stop it. How is that fair to them? Can't the 10 Wiccas in EC have group meetings, the way the Navigators, Student Impact, and all the other UWEC Christian groups meet? For one thing, it's a constitutional right for us to be able to meet together, yet the fuss the Wiccas made wasn't enough to get the school or the city to protect them.

The Bible says that God's people will be persecuted. Christians have always read these passages to doubters to prove their correctness. I've done it myself. But persecution doesn't prove anything except someone else thinks you're wrong (or just plain doesn't like you, or perhaps that you're too sensitive). Christians have been persecuted, Wiccas have been persecuted. Neither of them, logically then, can claim this as proof of their correctness. The fact that the Bible says that its followers will be persecuted only proves that someone had his thinking cap on when writing it.

Now, i could equally claim persecution. I have had my church called 'not a real church... you just hang out' (i thought that comment, though somewhat naive, was very cute, and am just using it as an example) and my 'denial of the Lord's place in your heart an ultimate testimony to the power of the Devil.' My own mother thinks i have forsaken Eternal Life for the Riches of This World. On a level that matters much more to me, i've said flippant things and had Christian friends give a look of pity; silly sarah doesn't know what she'll be-a-missing in heaven, ay, perhaps someday she'll find her way. Condesending is to me very harsh. Damn, now that i'm on the topic i can think of dozens more.

But it doesn't make me right.

Eau Claire, day three.

Spring break is much shorter than it ought to be, and the weather here is unaware of the season. Warm up! My puppy fell through some ice into a puddle this morning, twas very sad.

I'm waiting for Bekah to arrive, but i don't know at what time that will be. My dogs have given me three false arrival warnings in the last hour, so now i'm getting anxious for her to be here, if only to justify Spence's stupidness.

Yesterday i went to see Bound with Tasha & Katie, twas quite fun. All seems quite the same in Putnam dorm. Life goes on without me. Saturday was a Racy's/Borders day with Donna and Rachel, quite quiet but very good. Friday Rachel & i went to see the Menomonie Street improv group, and Glen, Jenny and her boyfriend were there. Young Glenna & Brian from the UU were in the Improv troupe, and they were really, really good. I was impressed, which is saying a lot.

The Youth group thing at church yesterday was way better than the ones i remember helping with. Evan did an amazing soliloquy from Titus, and Ben managed to insult most of the church by calling us all OLD. It was hilarious, Ben is my hero. And then we sang We All Live in a Yellow Submarine, because, as you know, it is very spiritual. Especially the part after "and the band began to play...."

I think Rachel should have mentioned something about her collages, because in loose UU definitions, collage is art. But she did not....

I'll be back in EC around 2 am tonight, and for most of next week. You know what that means:

Dansk fest! behagelig, ja.

Okay, you may not know what that means because i wrote it in Danish. (Hint: Viggo! Shout it vigorously and all will be well.) Trust me, it will be good. In the frozen north.

Happy Birthday, Rachel!

Just when my circumstance was at its direst, a recycling bin saved me.

Yesterday i found many magazines. I was almost out, had reached an all-time low in magazine availability. Sometimes when i am out of magazines it's a good thing; i produce collages rather than continuing to collect papers and never do anything with them. I finally finished two wall collages, and a few little ones in the last few weeks. But i need my magazines.

I am a very easy person to please. Just supply me with glossy print and i am happy.

The weekend in general was very, very pleasant. For more reasons than just finding magazines.

There is a first time for everything.

Zja, great.

(I am so very wise. Heh.)

But the play itself wasn't very good. I dislike musicals as a matter of principle.

"the early atmosphere was pretty much like the atmosphere over Texas is now"

"we're just so pretty because our amino acids are left handed. imagine if they were all right-handed. we'd all speak german, or have three eyes and hearts in our butts."

Hmmm, these quotes were way funnier in context. However, i'd just like to let you all know that out of the mouth of Miriam, a certain TA of myne, many poorly translated things issue.

Please forgive my burst of blogging outrage yesterday. Turns out my plans did come through, and it was fabulous.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocked, this much is known. Karen O. has the best stage presence ever. Great singer. Best performer ever. Mullet. Great Mullet.

Their openers were alright, and now i can honestly say i have seen a hex-uddered-cow bodysurfing.

I was up front, about two people back for most of the concert. The moshing was tame. I keep expecting Madison to be way more hardcore than it is. A guy in the crowd who owns a hair salon here in town asked me to be a hair model, but that means i'd have to let them cut and/or dye my hair.

"This glove smells nice."

And.

I held Karen O.'s hand.

For a moment i was hers.

argh. more on my spelling: i know i don't capitalize things that ought to be capitalized, and i know i often switch y for i, and i know i often add double letters where they should not be. Those things i am fine with. Other than that, misspellings are pure stupidity.

Once you know the rules you may break them.

This is my secondary motto.

Maybe i'll chew on something plastic till i feel better.

My plans for tonight fell through, it's super disappointing.

and i have a mandatory meeting tomorroww night. blah.

The post is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

I got another collage yesterday, complete with hidden signiture. Clever, very very clever. Hapifying.

And then i got a letter today, and i know i'll get another tommorroww... or soon, anyway. Yeah, aim whisks the joy of surprise away from these things, but that's the price we pay livin' in these times.

or whatEV. I also get a postcard from my mom every day, and i really wonder what she thinks she achieves with that. Ah well, some people just really love writing.

(and glue
and tape
and stamps)

I could never claim to be beyond that.

Sweet, i guess... but COMPLETELY uncalled for. Sincerely.

I had terrible handwriting in elementary school, as most children do. It really bothered me, though, and now my handwriting is getting worse and worse again. My wrists hurt all the time, though i have consciously not sprained either of them in over two years.

i also had very poor spelling, as most children do. i often added syllables where i thought people spoke them; 'wainet' for 'wait,' for example. (If you listen carefully to my dad, that's how he pronounces 'wait.') 'Sincerely' was 'sincerelessly' or some misspelled variation on that theme for many years. i was apalled when i realized what i'd been signing letters with for the first decade of my existence.

APALLED.

However, in this case it would be appropriate.

Among the things i learned this weekend:

1. It is bad to tell Rachel R. that i don't like pie.

2. It is good to let Rachel E. choose the entertainment.

3. My dog, Jessie, is going gray.

4. Thomas too is old.

5. Norweigan rap is much, much better than it should be.
