Accountable Infinity However (Letters to Myself)
symmetric anomaliesTime is not wrinkled, though it must be of fabric. Time is a half-done sewing project abandoned when the bodice-bit was attached backwards to the skirt-bit in my eagerness to complete a cute dress. Lacking ribbon to conceal the mistake, or patience to undo the mistake, the parts of the dress were put in a brown paper bag in the downstairs sewing/Star Trek tapes/games closet. Given that two or three ex-wives/girlfriends have moved in/out since those days when i loved to sew, it'll be a gamble to see if that brown dress/time is really extant.
Yesterday we went to some New Jersey garden and a large Asian foods mart. i bought Chinese toothpaste, Japanese Koala Marches (because they are so very good cheap chocolate-y to eat!), and mystery crackers. There was a very large fish area, which was stinky but intriguing to the several icthylogists in tow. i am still refusing to check and see if i spelled 'fish scientist' correctly, but now you know what that word is supposed to be.
i still have today and tommorroww [being a holiday] off from more mud-washing, but my proposal is due Thursday. (
preprints and reprints, damn i feel cool!) i have a lot to read, and then a lot to write, and i'm not sure where my paper should fall between ocean circulation and foraminfera speciation. The one thing that strikes me as absurdly clever about my project is that though i only need to know three species of forams to do it, two are planktonic and the third is "anything that looks like it can't swim," i.e., benthic. This is clever because the two planktonic species will be AMS dated separately from all the benthics, and though we know they're contemporaneous [from being in the same strata], they'll give different C14 dates. The difference in C14 dates shows how fast/slow the ocean was circulating (well, sort of, in theory...). It's wildly clever, and lots of current dating shows it works [most modern surface ocean water dates to 400 years, with deep waters dating from ~700 years and up]. AMS [accelerator mass spectrometry] dating is about the coolest thing ever. i don't actually get to use the machine, as the one we're using happens to be in California, but i'm preparing the samples to be shipped off & turned into plasma.
Hm. Explaining the clever-ness of the technique was rather like explaining a joke; not funny/clever after all the verbage. Butistilllikeit,yo.
The water here tastes fine when cold, but when warm tastes just like poison. Not any specific kind of poison i've ever tried, but exactly like my concept of how a poster poison would taste, were one to mix all poisons together and distill them past perfection. The point of this story is that though i have a practically primeval coffee-maker, wonderful Fair Trade French Roast ground coffee beans, and even electricity, honey, and milk, my coffee tastes like poison. i drink it anyway.
The coffee maker is so retro it blows my mynd. It has no on/off button, just on when plugged in, off when unplugged. i would describe its awesomeness in more detail, but i'll probably figure out my camera things before summer is through and regale all ya'll with coffee-maker/Atlantic ocean photos. The coffee pot is so cool... i want one just like it for my very own, this one being courtesy of my roommate's dad. i will go yardsaling in August until i am complete.
Donna called me yesterday and i was extremely happy. Sounds from back-home, oy i miss my cat and my friends and my sister.
i don't really know what my schedule is, but i'm not kidding when i say ya'll should call me sometime.
"I'll take some... Hungarian..."Today i sailed about New York Harbour and the Atlantic in a very small research vessle. We took depth, salinity, temperature, chloro-something and acoustic soundings. Good times. It mostly amounted to stopping and throwing the Niskin bottle & CTP overboard, then motoring for a ways and repeating. It was odd as i've not really been to New York city, just the WT printing press in Brooklyn that one time with two buses of JWs. But that is another story, the point of this one being my geography of the place is now completely atypical.
This is about all there is to report. i for the first time in almost three years don't feel a great need to type about everything i do/think. This, however, does not relieve my few readers of their responsibility to comment on everything i post.
i also got a box in the mail. Thanks to my mother for mailing me my bedding.
i am what, two days in? this feels like forever.
not in a bad way though. doncha worry kiddies.
washing mud, while less silly than you might think, is really really hard on my thumbs. ah, chemistry.
um, no, that didn't happeni like New Jersey so far. The junction between chemistry and geology is indeed very messy, but the only way to contaminate a foram sample is with another foram sample. No worries.
i miss EC a lot.
Excuse me while i ponder the depths of my own uncharted stupidity.
i think i'm going into cardiac arrest. i felt a neck vein thump.
The party was a roaring success; pun totally intended.
It was weird to see some Madison people & the EC people all together, as when i'm in Madison everyone here seems not quite real, and when i'm here vice versa. It's all sadness that i'm leaving for reals now. Best costume awards to Kate, RGE, Sarah I., Issa, Blake, Damian, and Darth. I'm too happy that Dave, Angie, and Jon got to meet Bekah, Nik, Rachel, Rachel, Bryan, et cetera. Craziness abounds.
In travel plans, Rutgers is much less than pleased with me that i'm flying now, and whether or not i'll get picked up at Newark airport Sunday afternoon will be a fun surprise. i can't express how frusterated with my dad i am over this. My anger will come back to him as he has to pay (monetarily that is) for his stupid indecisiveness. Unfortunately this will come back to me next time i need food money and he says, well honey, remember that time i paid for your plane tickets?? [disregarding fact that he wouldn't have had to pay so much for them was he not... fine, i'm done insulting my father now.]
Nik really did want to drive out there, though i never quite got an opinion from Bekah. Hi Tony, sorry if you're dissappointed, you won't see NJ this weekend.

You know what to do.
And if you don't, call me.

Above=attempted comic, 2002, Bekah, RR, me
Below=Thomas is adorable. Hover, yo.
"Whose angel are you anyway?Back in Eau Claire. It is insanity.
i kind of like it though.
My last few days in Madison were quite an adventure. It already seems like too long ago to comment upon further.... Since returning to EC i've seen Donna, RGE, RR, Justin, Arian, Bryan, Sarah I., Nik, Kirk, Bekah, and others i'm sure. i am rather tired, RGE & i went to Stanley today for the "hoedown;" adventures with the cousins ensued.
Right now my problem is that my dad thinks i should fly to NJ instead of driving. This is a huge problem as i was supposed to [and did] tell Rutgers two months ago what my travel plans are, and now to change them is a big hassle. Also, i am an idiot and don't know how to buy plane tickets online.
One time Ian flew from Washington to Minnesota. There was some terrible turbulence, and they were flying the late shift, so the sun was rising at 4 am above Montana, while below and above were black storm clouds, dark voids with streaks of anger [angAr!!]. All very frightening.
i don't think i'll like flying alone anyway.
blue dye in the rain...
RGE: Good effort! i read the comic again in your honour.
DD: Call me this weekend iffen i don't call you.
AHH!
Joy!
i didn't fail Physics!
i am suddenly much happier.
Perhaps after an entire semestre of complaining about physics i should qualify: i don't hate physics, i hate how it's taught at Madison. It's bad news. i was amazed at how boring that prof made relativity, et cetera. But i do really hate capacitance. Circuits suck.
Byran's Journal:
I DREAM of EMPIRE!Today, I played WoW at Bekah and Nik's house. I ate all of their food and was bothered by their cats. Murphy does not dream of EMPIRE. I think every boy in the world ought to be Catholic, because that would be HOTT. And they should be German too, because that would be HOTT.
I also went out to eat with Rachel R. We ran into Rachel G.E. and she giggled. BECAUSE I'M DYING. AAAAAAAH. I miss Sarah. I miss Tony. I miss other people too, but they're not nearly important enough to bother typing about.
I screamed something in German.
sarah's Journal:
i dream of world peace... and stuff....Today, i fretted about aragonite seas vs. calcite seas. i ate some carrots, because that is all the food i have. i miss Thomas. i think everybody should be unitarian universalist, because that would be awesome... except that it would be weird in a way too. i like being Welsh, especially when i go to my mom's house and all the Polish guys are like, 'that's weird, you're not Polish...[!?!]'
i miss the Rachels and their giggling. Lots. One time, RGE giggled almost to death because Bryan was DYING [too bad he didn't finish the job and we watched Rosanne instead of having a funeral]. i miss Bryan, i miss Tony, i miss other people too but it's creepy to write about people who don't use online thingys.
i mumbled something in Spanish.
1. scene: classic college conversation, 'what are you doing this summer?'
Me: i'm going to New Jersey. i'm leaving around the 19th, i'll be there all summer.
Random friend: Ah. That means you won't be home for too long. When are you leaving Madison?
Me: Whenever my dad picks me up. He might pick me up on Friday, but he has been known to forget me. It'll be a surprise.
i've had variants on that one several times, and everyone seems to think i am joking. i am not.
2. scene: Geology museum, 'these 3 are dinosaurs, these 3 are ice age mammals.'
Me: Then, a long time after all these dinosaurs all died, there were some big mammals. The one here is a Mastodon. He lived right here in Wisconsin, when there were glaciers. Remember that map i showed you? With all the ice? There were also Glyptodons *points* and Dinotheriums *points.* They were all mammals who lived 16 thousand or so years ago.
Some first grader: Did the Glyptodon *points* get eaten by the T-rex *points?*
Me: No, the T-rex-es all died way before Glyptodons were alive.
Some first grader: But Glyptodons would have been good to eat. *Rarrrrgh* T-rex liked meat!
Me: Um, the Cretaceous was
way before the Pleistocene. T-rex was totally dead when Glyptodons were here. Some first grader: If I was a T-Rex, I'd eat BOTH THE GLYPTODON AND THE MASTADON!
Me: Just because they're both dead doesn't mean they got dead at the same time!
Anyway, i swear this happens every tour. Either that or some first grader knows way more about dinosaurs than i do (which isn't hard by any means) but then i feel silly. Talking to them, that is.
3. scene: Geology museum, attempted beginning of spiel on 'why is Geology important?'
Me: If i can have everyone come over here, we're going to go into the next room. First we'll talk about why any of us bother to study this stuff.
First graders: *create chaos across the land, a few gather near me*
Me: La la la... [quietly] Do you guys like my rhetorical questions so far?
Most first graders: Uhhhhh.... *murmuring in the ranks*
One first grader:
NOT AT ALL!Classify this one under 'hilarious when it happened, not too great in typeset.'
"The Carnian Age may mark the high point of Pangea. This is a difficult point to identify since, like the Roman Empire, Pangea continued to grow at the margins long after it had begun to crumble from within."(
Palaeos is my new favorite website.)
Also note their section on conodonts. It's pretty funny too.
Twenties: 8:00 p.m., Daddy's house, Eau Claire. Monday, May 16th. [note to Professor Adventure & all of you!]
Donna: Do you not have any school stuff that Monday? Of course we'll promenade, baebe!
Ahhhh!
Slate & pressed skeletons! You know you want to!A more coherent review of that link might read, "The blackboard discourses of the greats, preserved!" But i wouldn't have been the one to write that, no no.
Gol, that globe blackboard is the coolest thing i have ever seen. My house plans, for that indefinite point in the future when i have my own living space, look something like this: giant portrait of Vitamin B-12 in false colour; west wall. North & South wall; pale shades, windows. East wall; wall-sized photo of atomic blast [Bryan's request, not myne]. Many pets. Big kitchen. Built-in cupboards, et cetera; very feng shui with 19th century flea store leanings. New addition to mental house of future: a really, really cool globe blackboard. The architecture i envisage is a cross between my mom's farmhouse and the current hizzouse. For some reason, i like how that particular apartment is set up. Except for the closet right by the door, that is. The half-wall between the kitchen & living room, however, is great.
coffee coffee coffee coffee coffeeAh, further examples of my fritzy-ness could be many; suffice it to say it's a real good thing my "boss" at the museum emails out the schedules every time they're edited.
In further news, i've been reading
Ship Fever, which is a series of short stories that all have something to do with science, mostly biology. They're good, but too melancholy for a summer's day [yesterday]. Today it is cold and windy, and thus appropriate. Madison, someday you will have nice weather. Promise me this. [pleeeeeease??]
Why is it that there is
no little good fiction about geologists/geology? Are geologists fundamentally boring? There are plenty of good novels starring physicists, and even a few starring biologists, geneticists, et cetera. I read one of the Em Hansen mysteries, about a geologist/mud logger who stumbles upon murder[er]s at every oil rig, it only served to reaffirm that i don't like murder mysteries all that much. I learned a little about sandstone, however. Yay.
Physics final today. Eat some vegetables.
'no, no one wants a sketchy toaster!'
examples of how my fritzy-ness lately:Wendesday afternoon:
Craig: I'll see you after the tour.
Me: i'm giving a tour today?
Craig: Yes....
[being reminded to be somewhere on time by Craig is like being reminded to eat lunch by Sam]
later:
Me: Well, we could study for Physics tommorroww.
Angie: I can't, I have a different final Friday.
Me: Now that you mention it, i do too. Hm.
other random things overheard in the Geology building lately:while examining uraninite sample:
Student: Could the radiation hurt us?
Prof: Only if you strapped it to yourself for many years.
later:
Prof: I think I'll make a uraninite belt. I'm tired of swimming uphill.
visiting speaker on climate change:
It's hard to migrate with a parking lot in the way.
while discussing the 20s:
Do you have chest hair? *checks* You MUST cross-dress!
Well anyway, all i have left this semester is the physics final Monday & geobiology final Thursday. My dad hasn't been home when i've called, so i'm not sure when i'll actually get back to EC. My mom called me this morning whilst i was still sleeping, i think she said she'd be willing to pick me up any day
but Thursday, so i'm thinking about asking to take the geobiology final early, since all i have going on T&W is a few tours, i can easily get that bit o' studying done. Are you still pretending to be fascinated by my writing? Good! The other exciting thing in my life is that i sold some textbooks so i have enough money to buy food. Amazing. I can't wait to eat some cheese, all i've had all weekend is beets and carrots. Not that they're bad, but i'll never understand what posessed me to buy several cans of beets.
yayyyy engineers in flapper dresses....
Rates of Lunar Helium-3 deposition, Bleaching in Utah & Blueberries on Mars, The Famous Hockey Stick, and a really expensive sandwichThe Alumni day was interesting, though i didn't actually talk to any alumni other than the ones i already know. Shy attack. i also saw the Hitchiker's Guide movie last night, it was good. Ford Prefect was almost (eerily) exactly how i imagined him, though Trillian was not what i pictured at all. And Slartibartfast's showroom floor was awesome. Go see it, but read the books first you lazies!
Oh, and the thing about Helium-3 is crazy.
Dr. Schmitt wants to set up a lunar settlement that would mine He-3, use it as an energy source, and export it back to earth. Which is [apparently] feasible. The cool thing i learned about Helium-3 recently, however, is that due to the fact it accummulates on earth at a very constant rate, it's a good tool for measuring how quickly sediments were deposited. I wonder if that's been applied much to the pre-K/P decline vs. catastrophe debate. eh, probably. In any case,
the biotic recovery took only 10,000 years.
i got an award for Norway....
"I miss those belemnites!"--Angie--
Mollusks: Cephalopoda
Ammonoidea: Devonian-K
Baculites: the weird straight guys, just Cretaceous, like a light
Belemnites: Mississippian-K, mostly Jurassic (funny round guys, calcite rostrum, Urey's stable isotope standard, PDB)
Class: Bivalvia [mo' mollusks!]
Gryphaea Jur-Eocene [devil'l toenails]; Inoceramus Jur-K; Trigonia Tri-K; Exogyra Jur-K
Rusdists: K!
other guys: Echinodermata: Irregular Echinoid Heart Urchin, Mes&Ces
"so close to touching freedomthen I hear the guards call my name" --TA--
i finally got around to going rock climbing last night. i am actually sore. i need to do many pushups.
Spanish final Friday, Physics final Monday, Geobiology final Wendesday. Have i mentioned, Geology Open House this weekend? Important people, all dressed up for each other and debating the intricacies of Permian seaways. [this falls into the category of that classic conversation, “i attend Madison, i’m a geology major.” which is always followed by, “Oh! Have you met Bob Dott??” (Why yes, i have, actually….)] i have no idea what’s going on. In other news, calcite seas vs. aragonite seas. Now REALLY. [in the category of ‘Who not to trust after 4:00 p.m.’]
some of the saddest things ever:
1. That time when Douglas Adams died. It was spring, 2001 i believe [so in answer to your question, RGE, it was more than a year or two ago]. In any case, i was still in highschool & Ian & i wore towels to school the next week, which was crazy because at the time neither of knew the other was obsessed with DNA.
2. In the winter of 2003 when Sam, Katie, RR, MaRy and me drove all the way to the Chippewa zoo, walked all the way through the cold past all the scary xmasy light thingys, and just as we [finally!] came near the bear cages i said to Katie, "Don't these bears hibernate?" and she said, "Yes, they sure do...." We didn't have the heart to tell Sam, who was indeed very sad once he too realized the bears were hibernating. And that we had to walk all the way back. (Sam is probably the one person who could be described as 'crestfallen' of emotion without being pretentious.) [i.e., i'm glad/surprised that the bears were out for you.]
3. That time i forgot about MaRy. i feel bad about that.
This is my last tuesday this semestre. i really shouldn't be this happy about it.
The Welsh must once have been great pogo-stick athletes. They also excelled at three-legged races, and kicking things with the same foot every time. [i've decided my crooked foot is an evolutionary vestige of a time when mismatched feet was helpful. You think that's revisionist history? Talk to 1. BethAnne on the history of noodles 2. any creationist 3. anyone at the 20s Salon after about 11:30.]
so i was walking down state street, and i ran into my highschool philosophy teacher.
Craziness!
Bekah: we ought to do a drive-by MHS visit that one week i'm in towne. i think Kazz misses us.
*giggle*
RGE: 'quacker' does not equal 'Quaker.' Just a note, hunny.
On the subject of Funny Things We Do, that Simultaneous Kick at the Grumpy Troll is STILL AWESOME, and i told one of my friends here about it, only to realize it doesn't make any sense without 1. knowing you 2. a thouragh re-enactment; which we MUST look into sometime.
and for truly we begin to see that sanity itself lies in the ability to laugh at those things that hurt; and from the people that say 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger,' we glean wisdom from their cliche; onward and upward even with swim team cheers in my head....in conclusion, almost everything that should be going alright in my life is. Apart from finances, that is. i totally conquered dualism a few weeks ago; the reason there was no insanely long blog post on the subject was that writing itself is of course dualistic: but the point is that i'm now okay with that.
Ah, it is snowing out. This is a problem as i must walk very far for supper. This is okay, however, because my supper is long ago paid for and shall be interesting.
repitition, addition, trilobite toss, juggling, a six-foot-globe and... that's it.
rocks, by any definition/clip art indescribable
