racism & weather
Well, we've all heard about Katrina. Lots dead, lots displaced, lots and lots and lots of government errors.
Now just why is anyone surprised?
Good damn, i'm not the lazy geologist, i'm the cynical geologist. YOU CAN'T BUILD A CITY ON A DELTA, REROUTE THE RIVER AND DREDGE THAT REALLY, REALLY BIG RIVER FOR 150 YEARS, AND PUMP OUT OIL FROM [ALMOST] NEXT DOOR FOR FIFTY YEARS AND THEN BE SURPRISED WHEN THE WHOLE PLACE SUBSIDES.
LOWER THAN SEALEVEL.
BY A LOT.
Duh.
And THEN, you can't be so cheap to build levees that not even Bangladesh would show up to an international cocktail party with and then be SURPRISED and AMAZED and SORRY and such when the whole damn thing breaks.
Subside means to sink. Okay now i'm done ranting.
That was such a lie. Furthurmore, this same thing happened in 1927 (on purpose that time to a black neighborhood no less) and in the early 1970s.
Flooding of New Orleans has just been a matter of time since always, and i am more than a little upset that the government somehow never saw it coming (or rather, just couldn't care about its own citizens just because poor-black-people don't vote their way oft enough).
The only NYT article that didn't make me want to force the entire nation to take Geology 101 at gunpoint.
p.s. though i'm sure you've already heard it: but GOD ISN'T BUSH'S MOM AWESOME??:
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this — this is working very well for them," she said.
Yeah---that whole my-cousin-dying-of-waterborne-diseases-that-you-thought-only existed-in-Africa and my-dog-drowning and i-fucking-ended-up-in-Texas thing worked out well for me too. i just can't wait to go back to the largest Superfund site in the free world.

thanks! i actually tend to avoid political rants on here, as that's not really what my blog is about. But this whole thing is so ludicrous i just had to vent somewhere.
Oh my goodness Sarah you are awesome. Can you come and yell about to geology to RIT for building an entire college campus in a swamp? Cuz then you would be my hero.
i would, but UWEC didn't heed me when i went on about their 10-year flood zone.
