Interesting article. It has drawn a fairly ugly picture for the future of small family farms. They will likely need to specialize in growing crops which are hard to industrialize, if they hope to stay alive.
As for the re-localization movement, I picture a different scenario playing out. I believe the Victory garden is on the verge of a huge comeback. More cities are going to allocate public spaces for community garden projects. Canning is going to become commonplace again. These activities will ease the monetary burden, not replace the current model.
Cheers,
Adam

The Victory garden & canning will definitely come back, but i'm really beginning to wonder when, exactly, we're going to see that commonly. i spose that bit goes back to my favorite quote ever, 'We learn geology the morning after the earthquake.' (RWE)
As for specializing in crops that remain labour-intensive, here in WI the Hmong & Mexicans have the market cornered. Whitey doesn't stand a chance making his kids work as cheaply as the immigrants do... i guess i'm left to wonder at what point will we suck up our collective pride & relearn the skills our grandparents had?
i guess, even with all the Little House on the Prairie & Willa Cather books i've read, i take it as given that family farms are a better model for food production than factory farms. The trend towards huge industrial plantations continuing really just doesn't make sense to me... but if we're really in a position where the only way to feed the population is to corporatize food--good lord!--so be it.
i have a lot of issues with this article, but all the numbers seem right as far as i can tell. It's beyond disturbing.
